The Saint Paul Fire Department provides both Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) services to Minnesota’s capital city. All Saint Paul Firefighters are required to hold an EMT certification, or higher certification, to deliver this critical care to our community. While dual-trained as Firefighters, EMTs respond to a wide variety of incidents, including fire suppression, rescue operations, and medical calls that allow them to apply their EMT skills in a dynamic pre-hospital patient care setting.

Much has changed in Saint Paul over the past several years. The department now operates a dedicated BLS Division that responds to lower-acuity medical calls, continues to send EMTs to Paramedic school each year, and has expanded opportunities for members to develop and advance their medical skills throughout their careers. We also support participation on specialized teams such as the Minnesota Air Rescue Team (MART), Minnesota Task Force 1, and State Hazardous Materials Teams.

Firefighter skills are taught in our academy, but individuals are expected to bring their EMT experience with them from day one. In addition to base pay, EMTs receive a premium for utilizing their medical skills. This premium increases over the course of a career and is higher for members assigned to Engine/Medic companies.

The Saint Paul Fire Department is currently accepting applications for Firefighter through February 27, 2026. Prospective applicants are encouraged to attend an information session to learn more about the position and the hiring process. A list of information sessions, along with application requirements, salary and benefits information, hiring timelines, physical test preparation resources, and the application link, can be found at www.stpaul.gov/firefighter.

It’s a great time to join the Saint Paul Fire Department!

Congratulations to the 2025-A Graduates of the Saint Paul Fire EMS Academy!

On Friday, May 16, 2025, the Saint Paul Fire EMS Academy, in partnership with Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS), proudly graduated eight high school seniors from its Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program. These students, representing six SPPS high schools, join the ranks of 362 past graduates.

This 15-week program marked the Academy’s 16th year and celebrated a major milestone—its 25th graduating class.

Through a strong partnership with Century College, each student earned 9 college credits, while many were also enrolled in International Baccalaureate (IB) courses and participated as multi-sport athletes—demonstrating incredible dedication and discipline.

We extend our sincere gratitude to:

Saint Paul Public Schools for supporting this transformative opportunity,

Century College for enabling dual credit achievement,

Lake Elmo Fire Department for allowing students to ride along with their crews for patient contact,

Blaze Credit Union for its long-standing commitment to financial literacy,

Ramsey County for providing uniform support,

And, of course, to the families, friends, and educators who stood behind these students every step of the way.

Congratulations, 2025-A! Your hard work has paid off. Be proud of all you’ve accomplished—and never forget to let your light shine.

As our students began week 9 of this 15 weeks they presented on the heroes of the original Freedom House and present day Pittsburgh EMS. We have taught our students what their program means and why it exist. In order to know where your going you have to know where you have been. They seemed excited and proud knowing their instructors have spent time with the Freedomhouse Medics and with the Pittsburgh EMS Chiefs.
