Ready to switch your Minnesota veterinary license from inactive back to active? Here are the steps you’ll need to complete:

• Provide verification of licensure in good standing from the state where you’re currently practicing OR submit documentation showing you’ve met Minnesota’s continuing education requirement of 20 CE credits per year retroactive to your inactivation date.

• Confirm that you’re not currently under disciplinary orders or investigation.

• Pay the appropriate fee - either the full difference between an inactive and unrestricted license (if you’re in the first year of the biennial cycle) or one‑half the difference (if you’re in the second year).

• Submit a completed license reactivation form.

Following these steps will get your license back to active status so you can continue practicing in Minnesota.

Canine Brucellosis is a tricky bug. Most animals infected with the disease appear normal and show no outward symptoms. However, the bacteria can wreak havoc on an animals’ reproductive systems leaving them infertile and lead to painful ailments like eye disease and spinal infections. Know the Rules: Licensed Veterinary Technicians in Minnesota renew their license every two years. Renewals are completed through the Board’s online portal - the same place where you first applied for your license.

When renewing your license, you’ll be asked to confirm completion of the required 16 hours of continuing education (CE) and to maintain documentation as instructed by the Board. CE doesn't need to be uploaded to your portal unless you are one of the random percentage of applicants who are selected for a CE audit. The Board will be in touch if you are, so it's important to keep your CE documents available if requested.

Keeping your license current ensures you remain eligible to practice and continue serving Minnesota’s veterinary community.

With the Board now overseeing veterinary technician titling in Minnesota, LVT continuing education requirements have been updated to support consistency and professional development across the field.

LVTs must complete 16 hours of CE every two years to renew their license. CE can be earned through any combination of live or recorded learning - whatever best fits your schedule.

A quick reminder:
No more than 4 of your 16 hours may be in non‑medical subjects. The remaining hours should focus on medical CE that supports your veterinary skills and ongoing professional growth.

In Minnesota, unlicensed veterinary employees play an important role in supporting patient care. Their work must take place under appropriate supervision from licensed professionals to ensure safety, consistency, and high‑quality care.

A new Minnesota law allows certain unused pet medications to be donated and redistributed, with the goal of reducing waste and lowering costs for pet owners. Minnesota Board of Veterinary Medicine Executive Director Dr. Pam Johnson joins us to explain how the program works and who could benefit.

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is considering updates to the Ionizing Radiation (X-Ray) rules, Minnesota Rules, Chapter 4732 through the rulemaking process. The proposed amendments will update the X-Ray Rules to address advances in equipment technology, scope of practice for operators of X-ray equipment, service provider responsibilities, inspection requirements, legislative changes, and other related topics.

MDH published the “Request the for Comments” in the Monday, July 27, 2026, in the State Register and will be accepting comments on possible changes to the rules in writing until further notice is published in the State Register that the Department intends to adopt or withdraw the rules.
