Local Business Showcase: NOW Bikes

Right on Snelling Avenue, NOW Bikes has been a steady part of the Union Park neighborhood for more than 40 years. It’s the kind of place many neighbors recognize, whether they’re stopping in for their kid’s first bike, upgrading to something new, or just trying to figure out what’s going on with a squeaky chain.

From the beginning, the focus has been simple: take care of people. When Paul Himmelman and Bob Sumada stepped into the business in its early years, they made a point to focus not just on selling bikes, but on everything that comes after. That means making sure each customer leaves with something that actually fits their needs, and knowing they can come back with questions, tune-ups, or anything else down the line.

That approach has stuck. NOW Bikes works with riders at every level, from families just getting started to more experienced cyclists. Their staff is approachable and knowledgeable, and they welcome people who might not even be sure what they’re looking for yet. You don’t need to have all the right terminology or experience, just an interest in riding is enough to start a conversation.

Over the years, a lot has changed in retail, but NOW Bikes has kept that same neighborly feel. It’s not just about making a purchase and heading out the door; it’s about having a place to return to when you need help, advice, or a quick fix.

After more than five decades on Snelling, NOW Bikes continues to be a go-to spot for Union Park residents looking to get out and ride, with a team that’s ready to help at every step.

Special thanks to everybody who participated in our Big Ole’ Trash Party! We appreciate your efforts to create a cleaner, safer community in Union Park and our neighbors to the North in Hamline Midway. Together, community members cleaned up over 190 trash bags off of the Snelling and University Avenue corridor. Contributions like this are what makes Union Park and the city of St. Paul so special!

Union Park and Hamline Midway will host additional spring cleanups every 1st and 3rd Saturday from 10-11:30am at the Spruce Tree Building on Snelling and University Avenue. Come to clear trash, leave with community and conversation.

Union Park has street barricades that community members can use for block parties, neighborhood, or family events. The street barricades are required by the city when you block off your street or alley -- but ours are a more-affordable option than getting them from Public Works. Barricades only cost $40 and also require a $80 deposit which you will get back after returning the barricades. Reservations are first-come, first-served. To borrow our barricades, you must have an event permit from the city. To reserve this equipment, fill out the Interest form below.

Play Streets are block parties that occur on a regular basis, operating monthly, weekly, or any convenient schedule. It creates a safe space for activities, play, and community gathering. Have a conversation with your neighbors about scheduling a date for your own Play Street event.

Union Park is able to promote two more Play Street areas within the neighborhood. We are able to offer barricades free of charge, to be held by host/participant in Union Park and will support the process of applying and of learning how to initiate this great neighborhood development. To learn more follow the link below, and or reach out to [email protected] with questions.

Union Park is working closely with Common Bond Communities to support donations For the residents displaced at Skyline Tower

In October 2025, a fire and electrical failure caused severe flooding, forcing nearly 800 residents from their homes. In the months that followed, many families faced continued hardship, compounded by the impact of Operation Metro Surge, which brought additional fear and uncertainty to the community.

We are working closely with onsite staff to assist residents who are still recovering, replacing water-damaged belongings, and rebuilding from the challenges of the past year. Donations will help provide everyday necessities such as blankets, pillowcases, towels, linens, and other essential household items, as well as activities and resources for children.

Your generosity will make a meaningful difference in helping these families rebuild and feel at home again.

You can bring any donations to the Merriam Park Library.
