Small Sums

Small Sums Small Sums helps folks experiencing homelessness in MN with the gear they need to start a new job, keep it, and thrive.

Small Sums’ sole purpose is to help homeless individuals, who have found jobs, with the specific things that they need to start back to work. With our practical and timely assistance, (that few other agencies provide), we remove obstacles that often prevent homeless workers from being able to take a job – by providing required work clothes and shoes, trade tools, professional licenses or union due

s, and/or bus passes so they have a reliable way to get to work everyday (until they receive a paycheck). Partnering with referring organizations that serve the poor and homeless, we provide these simple things, (the majority at less than an average of $150 per worker), often within 24-72 hours from their application, so they are able to accept the job and start working within days of the job offer - one of the most important steps to getting out of their homeless situation. It’s a surprisingly simple solution that is practical and economical and it fosters the important role of self-sufficiency in helping them get into places of their own. Our clients want to work and our program is committed to supporting their resiliency and efforts. Small Sums gives homeless workers the ability to say “yes” to a job and put them back on the path to a more stable life and being productive community members and taxpayers again.

We’re excited to launch the Small Sums Book Club!

We are reading See No Stranger: A Memoir and Manifesto of Revolutionary Love by Valarie Kaur. The team had the pleasure of meeting with Valarie yesterday to learn more about the Revolutionary Love Compass and how to apply it to Small Sums' work.

See No Stranger is a beautiful and transformative work. We encourage you to grab your own copy: https://www.blackgarnetbooks.com/item/3bfSPEKfdTe10rRvjsA1Og
And join us on June 7th for our first book club discussion.

Join us as we read, reflect, and talk about how these themes show up in real life and in our community. 💛

We’re sad to share that Tosh will be leaving Small Sums after 4 years with our team.

Tosh was a strong member of the Small Sums team. He brought a deep sense of caring and community to his work. Meeting people where they are at and welcoming each worker with kindness. Tosh is a ball of light and was a joy to have around the office!

While we’ll truly miss him, we’re excited to share that Tosh is stepping into a new role as an Employment Coach at UJAMAA Place, where he’ll continue his work supporting justice-impacted individuals in their path to employment.

We’re grateful for everything he’s given to Small Sums, and we’ll be cheering him on as he begins this next chapter.

Thank you, Tosh, you’ll always be part of the Small Sums story. 💛
