St. Vincent de Paul CARES FL

St. Vincent de Paul CARES FL Making Homelessness Rare. Brief. One-Time. Throughout 22 Counties in Florida and now Puerto Rico The history of St. Vincent de Paul CARES (SVdP CARES).

Vincent de Paul begins over 185 years ago in Paris, France when a young college student, Frederic Ozanam, and a group of friends visited the homes of those who were poor. They brought them food, clothing, support, friendship, and eventually formed the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in honor of the saint, an “Apostle of Charity,” who lived 400 years before. Today, over 800,000 worldwide members pre

serve the spirit of St. Vincent de Paul and the charity work of Frederic Ozanam, including those within St. Founded in 1985 by local SVdP Catholic conferences, the “Society of St. Vincent de Paul South Pinellas, Inc. (SVdPSP)” was tasked with providing spiritual and material support to people in need in Pinellas County. As those needs increased, a Community Thrift Store was built in the nineties, and later the purchase of the Center of Hope temporary shelter followed by the Food Center and CARE Center night shelter in 2006. By 2017, SVdPSP had expanded exponentially and now does business as SVdP CARES. And from its humble beginnings serving Pinellas county, SVdP CARES is now ending homelessness in 16 counties, continuing to fulfill the vision of Frederic Ozanam. SVdP CARES is an independent 501(c)(3) organization, separate from St. Vincent de Paul USA.

As we look toward Memorial Day 2026, we are honored to share a story of patriotism, resilience, and hope. ❤️🤍💙

Gabriele, a U.S. Army Veteran and loving mother of two young children, faced unimaginable challenges after fleeing domestic abuse and losing financial security. With nowhere else to turn, she and her children sought refuge — only to encounter another unsafe environment that ultimately left them homeless.

In April 2025, Gabriele was welcomed into the caring arms of SVdP CARES, where her journey toward healing began.

“When I first met Gabriele, she was carrying so much pain. She felt like she had failed her children and often blamed herself for everything she had been through,” shared her SVdP CARES case manager.

Through courage, resilience, and the support of a compassionate team, Gabriele began rebuilding her confidence, self-worth, and future.

“I feel empowered and encouraged as so much in my life has changed for the better.”

Stories like Gabriele’s remind us why our mission matters. Together, we can help Veterans, families, and individuals find safety, stability, and hope for a brighter tomorrow.
