Bipartisan Group of Lawmakers Reintroduces SSI Restoration Act

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), and Representatives Adelita Grijalva (D-Ariz.), Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), and James Moylan (R-GU), with more than 30 other lawmakers in support, reintroduced the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Restoration Act of 2026.

SSI is a lifeline for older adults and people with disabilities who have little to no other resources. But the program’s outdated rules and benefit levels keep the people who rely on it living in poverty, with no path to raise their living standards.

Justice in Aging has long championed the bill through many previous iterations. This version expands eligibility to people in the U.S. territories of Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and American Samoa who are currently excluded. The bill would also update SSI’s asset and income limits and increase the SSI benefit rate to 100% of the Federal Poverty Level.

A recent Roosevelt Institute report found that implementing the provisions of the SSI Restoration Act would reduce poverty by 60% among the more than seven million low-income older adults and people with disabilities the program supports.

Today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a day to recognize the dignity, rights, and contributions of people with disabilities in our community.

At PCSO, we're committed to ensuring law enforcement, EMS, and fire personnel can serve everyone safely and effectively through our Respond With Care program for Pinellas County residents. Residents with autism, sensory issues, cognitive differences, or other special needs can request a free sticker for their home or vehicle.

When first responders see this sticker, they know to prepare for a variety of situations and make accommodations to help the individual.
