This page is a product of the FWRI-Mote Cooperative program, which aims to mitigate the adverse effects of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs), specifically the Florida red tide, Karenia brevis, along the Florida Gulf coast. This continuing program promotes monitoring, research, and public education, which are of critical concern to the State of Florida.

Over the past week, the red tide organism, Karenia brevis, was observed in 13 samples from Florida’s East Coast. Bloom concentrations (>100,000 cells/liter) were present in one sample from Nassau County. We continue to use satellite imagery (USF and NOAA NCCOS) to help track nearshore and offshore conditions. Imagery from August 27 revealed elevated chlorophyll levels in Nassau and Duval counties (see Statewide Red Tide Status map below).

Additional details follow.
• In Southwest Florida over the past week, K. brevis was not obeserved.
• In Northwest Florida over the past week, K. brevis was not observed.
• Along the Florida East Coast over the past week, K. brevis was observed at very low to medium concentrations in Nassau County, background to low concentrations in Duval County, and background to low concentrations in St. Johns County.

No Fish kills suspected to be related to red tide were reported to FWC's Fish Kill Hotline or other partners over the past week.

Respiratory Irritation suspected to be related to red tide was not reported over the past week in Florida. For forecasts that use FWC and partner data, please visit the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Gulf Coast Harmful Algal Blooms Forecast.

Short-term (3.5 day) forecasts by the USF-FWC Collaboration for Prediction of Red Tides predict net northern movement of surface waters and variable transport of subsurface waters from Pinellas to northern Monroe counties.

Over the past week, the red tide organism, Karenia brevis, was observed in 25 samples from Florida’s East Coast and at background concentrations in two samples from offshore of Southwest Florida. Bloom concentrations (>100,000 cells/liter) were present in one sample from Nassau County. We continue to use satellite imagery (USF and NOAA NCCOS) to help track nearshore and offshore conditions. Imagery from August 19 revealed elevated chlorophyll levels in Nassau and Duval counties (see the Statewide Red Tide Status Map below).

The red tide organism, Karenia brevis, was observed at background to low concentrations in 13 samples from Florida’s East Coast, and background concentrations in seven samples along Florida’s Gulf Coast. We continue to use satellite imagery (USF and NOAA NCCOS) to help track nearshore and offshore conditions.
