Glynn County History—Did You Know that the Brunswick-Glynn County Library once operated a bookmobile?
The Brunswick-Glynn County Library started offering bookmobile services in 1948. Originally the bookmobile only serviced Glynn County residents. However, starting as early as 1950, the bookmobile would also venture into Camden County. Later additional stops would be added to include Wayne, Long, Charlton, and McIntosh Counties. We still hear many wonderful stories of encounters patrons would have at the many stops along the way. Bookmobile stops were made at nursing homes, retirement homes, senior citizen centers, churches, youth centers, and different neighborhoods. Later bookmobile models could hold upwards of 15,000 volumes covering various genres, including children’s books. The bookmobile gave a hands-on, personalized experience for members unable to make it to a brick-and-mortar library. The bookmobile operated until 2009 when it was officially retired. A legacy of over sixty years of continuous service to residents of Glynn and surrounding counties that can be remembered and celebrated!
