This past year we applied to the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley for funding that would cover our operational costs. Through their foundation $8,000 of funding was awarded by The Kennedy Family Fund, The Arnett Family Fund and the Rick Shale Fund. I cannot express how important this funding was. Prior to this most of my time was spent searching for grants and applying to those we qualified. While not a waste of time it was often time that could have been better spent on actual things that needed attention in our Library. The funding we received allowed me the ability to focus more of my time on improvements to our operation and the programs that we offer here at the library.
One of those programs includes the Summer Reading Program and its weekly Lunch with our Librarian event. Each year our program's attendance grows with leaps that I can never seem to anticipate and I am extremely thankful to the volunteer, community, township, and patron support that we get. The first year we held our summer reading program we had at most 25 kids each week. The second year's attendance blew me away with an average of 45 kids every week for 10 weeks. Yesterday was the kick off of our 3rd year and the number of families and children that we had in attendance is affirmation that people truly value the work we do here. We almost doubled last years attendance with 88 children for a total of 139 attendees!
I re-opened this library because one of my favorite memories with my oldest daughter was walking with her here each week and I wanted my two youngest to be able to have that same experience. The families that visit each week are the the reward for the time I invest. The patrons and children who carry out stacks of books, tell me about their favorite character or attend our programs are the tangible memories made that will keep our community's future generations excited about visiting the library and develop their love of reading.
