Week 8 of 9 for the SFD Junior Fire Camp was the fundamentals of CPR, instructed by Fire Chief Sean Elwell and Assistant Chief Sherry Biddle of the Elsinboro Fire Company. On hand for the SFD was Deputy Chief Pelura, Lieutenant Pierson, and Firefighter Kiger. We graduate next week!

Week 7 of fire camp had our cadets practicing 1st-due engine & truck evolutions simultaneously. Handline deployment, forced entry, searching, victim removal, and fire extinguishment by 2 crews operating independently. They’re putting together all of the individual skills they were taught in the first 5 weeks.

On hand for the SFD was Chief Ayars, Lieutenants Burnette & Pierson, Firefighters Kiger & Pessalano, and Chief Instructor Mailley.

Week 6 of 9 for the SFD Junior Fire Camp was held last evening. The cadets spent some time at the beginning of the night to review some hose deployment techniques and critiques from a recent fire in the city. Then, the cadets broke out into teams and took turns deploying hand lines, making entry, advancing the line through the station building, forcing a door and continuing to extinguish a simulated fire. Additionally, some cadets took the time to refresh their skills on search techniques. All of the cadets performed seamlessly without fail amid the temperatures and humidity. SFD personnel on hand were Captains Damiano and Mendez, Lieutenants Burnette, Pierson and Prouse, and firefighters Kiger and Westcott.

Week 5 of 9 for the SFD Junior Fire Camp was held last night. We took a little time in the beginning of the night to refresh the cadets forcible entry skills on the door prop, before pausing to enjoy some food prepared by the Lodge Ministries. Eric Sharpe & team prepared hamburgers & hotdogs, chips, veggies, and brownies. A few minutes of camaraderie were enjoyed, then back to training.

Cadets donned their PPE, including SCBA with occluded masks. They were taught oriented search in reduced visibility conditions. They worked in pairs to search 2 rooms while communicating effectively with their partner.

SFD personnel on hand were Chief Ayars, Deputy Pelura, Lieutenants Burnette, Pierson, Prouse, firefighters Kiger & Pessalano.

Last night was week 4 of 9 of the SFD Junior Fire Camp. Cadets were taught hose deployment, handling, flowing, and packing. Each cadet had the opportunity to deploy and flow hand lines as the nozzleman, and as the backup firefighter.

The lesson was led by firefighter Andrew Delussa from Hopewell Stow Creek & Wilmington Fire Departments. Firefighters on hand were; HSCFD Chief Uhland, SFD Captain Mendez, Lieutenants Burnette, Pierson, and Prouse, Firefighters Kiger, Westcott, Pesselano, Chauffer Ayars, Deputy Chief Pelura, and Chief Ayars.

Week 3 of our 9-week Junior Fire Camp was held tonight. We reviewed PPE, SCBA, bottle changes, extinguishers, and forcible entry.
Tonight cadets learned about fire hose, hose diameter, thread & coupling types. They practiced single & double firefighter hose coupling, and intake connections. We went out on the street and practiced hydrant connections and hose repacking.

It was a hot night, and the cadets all worked through it without complaint. Canteen Karen was on scene with water and hydration ice pops to keep everyone hydrated.

On hand with the SFD were Chief Ayars, Deputy Pelura, Battalion Pankok, Captain Damiano, Lieutenants Burnette and Pierson, Firefighters Eller, Westcott, Kiger, Chauffer Ayars, and Canteen Karen.

Week 2 of our 9-week Junior Fire Camp was held tonight. Cadets learned about fire types and how to use extinguishers. They learned forcible entry using fire service hand tools. And they were introduced to thermal imaging cameras in zero visibility environments.

Guest instructors were retired Salem Battalion Chief Ken Gralley, Alloway Assistant Chief Jesse Harris, and Hopewell Stow Creek Chief Travis Uhland.

On hand with the SFD were Chief Ayars, Deputy Pelura, Captain Damiano, Lieutenants Burnette and Pierson, Firefighters Stell and Kiger.
