Engine 3, serving the North Lancaster area, is one of the busiest engines in Salem. Despite a busy day running from call to call, the crew of “E3-C” still made time for training.

This evolution focused on stretching a hose line into an area where access for a fire engine or truck would be limited.

Not every emergency happens where we can park an apparatus right outside. Long driveways, narrow access roads, large complexes, and other obstacles can require crews to adapt and find another way to get firefighters, equipment, and water where they are needed.

Training in these locations gives our crews an opportunity to identify challenges, work through solutions, and build a plan before an emergency happens.

These repetitions help ensure your Salem Firefighters are prepared to make the right decisions when seconds matter.

Salem Firefighters Complete Water Rescue in West Salem

This morning, Salem Fire Department crews responded to a report of people needing assistance in the river near 200 Glen Creek Road NW. Boat 5 launched and located three people on a log who were attempting to paddle to shore. Our water rescue crew quickly made contact with the group and assisted them to safety. One individual was evaluated for medical needs.

Great work by our crews and Boat 5 personnel for a safe and effective response.

As you enjoy our local waterways this summer, please wear a properly fitted life jacket and use extra caution around moving water.

This morning, Salem firefighters responded to a two-vehicle crash near McGilchrist Street SE and 22nd Street SE, where a pickup truck was found on its side with one person trapped inside.

Crews quickly established patient care and began a coordinated extrication operation. Firefighters safely removed the trapped patient in 16 minutes, and the patient was transported by ambulance for medical care.

The response included seven Salem Fire Department vehicles, with crews working together to manage patient care, extrication, and scene safety. Strong work by our Salem firefighters and dispatchers for a coordinated response focused on getting the patient safely out of the vehicle and into medical care.

Salem Fire Department has resumed hosting interns from the Chemeketa Community College Fire Program as part of their cooperative work experience.

This partnership gives students the opportunity to gain real-world experience alongside career firefighters, learning firsthand what it takes to serve a community. From responding to emergencies and participating in training to experiencing daily life at the fire station, these internships provide invaluable hands-on learning.

Just as important, your Salem firefighters have the opportunity to mentor the next generation of the fire service, sharing their knowledge, experience, and the values that define our profession.

HazMat Team 13 was proud to participate in the City of Gervais' National Night Out celebration at the invitation of Gervais Police Chief Bob Morris.

HazMat Team 13 is a regional hazardous materials response team staffed by members of your Salem Fire Department as part of the Oregon State Fire Marshal HazMat Team Program. The Oregon State Fire Marshal's HazMat Team Program provides specialized hazardous materials response capabilities throughout the state, responding to hazardous materials incidents while also supporting community outreach and public education.

The event brought together public safety agencies from across the region, including the National Guard, the U.S. Coast Guard, Woodburn Fire District, and the Oregon State Fire Marshal, allowing community members to meet first responders and learn about specialized resources serving the region.

With more than 500 people in attendance, National Night Out highlighted the importance of building relationships between first responders and the communities we serve. Events like these help educate the public, strengthen partnerships, and inspire confidence in the emergency services available throughout our region.

Thank you to Chief Bob Morris and the Gervais Police Department for the invitation and hospitality. We are always proud to represent Salem Fire and the Oregon State Fire Marshal while serving the communities of the Mid-Willamette Valley.

Your Salem Fire Department Deputy Fire Marshals wear many hats, using specialized knowledge and experience to help keep our community safe long before an emergency occurs.

Last week, members of our Community Risk Reduction Division conducted inspections and a site visit for a concert at the Oregon State Fairgrounds that included the use of pyrotechnics. Events like these require careful planning and coordination to ensure they can be enjoyed safely.

Before the event, our Deputy Fire Marshals met with the special effects team, reviewed the pyrotechnic plan, and observed demonstration "shots" to verify the effects could be used safely and in accordance with the fire code.

Much of fire prevention happens behind the scenes. Our Deputy Fire Marshals build strong relationships with event organizers, contractors, business owners, and other professionals throughout the community, spending countless hours collaborating to identify hazards before they become emergencies.

Keeping our community safe doesn't always start with a fire engine, it often starts with prevention.
