On October 21, shortly after 10 p.m., Salem firefighters responded to a commercial structure fire at the Salem Public Market, located at 1240 Rural Avenue SE.

Engine 1 arrived to find smoke and flames coming from the building's roof. Firefighters immediately began an aggressive fire attack, and the incident was upgraded to a second alarm to bring additional personnel and equipment to the scene. Crews searched the building to ensure no one was inside, while other firefighters worked to extinguish the fire and ventilate the structure.

Thanks to our crews' quick response and coordinated efforts, firefighters knocked down the fire in about 20 minutes, limiting further damage to the building, which serves multiple local vendors.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The Salem Fire Department is investigating the cause.

Great work by our Salem firefighters!

On October 21, at approximately 1:04 p.m., Salem firefighters responded to a vehicle that had crashed into a commercial building on Commercial Street NE, leaving the driver trapped inside. Firefighters from Engine 2 assessed the situation and began clearing merchandise and debris surrounding the vehicle. Their efforts allowed crews to safely reach and remove the driver.

The driver was evaluated at the scene and did not require transportation to the hospital. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported.

Incidents like this present unique challenges, including damaged building materials, debris, and potential hazards. SFD firefighters train regularly to handle these situations safely and effectively.

Great work by our Salem firefighters!

On October 21, at approximately 2:05 p.m., Salem firefighters responded to an injured person in the creek below Salem Hospital.

Engine 1 quickly recognized the need for specialized rescue resources and requested our technical rescue team. Hospital staff had already reached the patient and helped them to the creek bank but needed help getting them safely up the steep embankment.

Our firefighters used specialized rescue equipment to secure the patient and safely bring them up from the creek bank. We then returned the patient to Salem Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Searching structures is a foundational skill that is taught in academy and continues to be trained throughout a firefighter’s career.

Training doesn’t stop after academy, in fact, after academy is where the real learning begins.

Recently, crews with probationary firefighters from our most recent academy continued to hone these skills. They reviewed fire behavior indicators, search patterns, techniques for checking beds, cribs, and other areas where occupants may be located, along with other important considerations for safe and effective search operations.

Probationary firefighters apply the fundamentals they learned to the streets, working to improve their skills and continue to earn the right to serve this great community.
