Once you get off of Flinderation Road you will cross a bridge and you keep right and then you drive for about 500ft or little more and you will notice in the road that it looks like train tracks ran across the road and you will see a gate on your right hand side in the middle of used to be railroad tracks and thats where you park your car. From the gate to the Tunnel is about 100yds or so back. Yo
u will see the "Lake Floyd" sign on your right. Thats the next exit on the left and then Flinderation Road is the "Next" exit on the right. If your coming West going east your will travel thru salem on Rt 50 and the exit before Flinderation Road is Raccoon Run Road. You will cross a bridge and you keep right and then you drive for about 500ft or little more and you will notice in the road that it looks like train tracks ran across the road and you will see a gate on your right hand side in the middle of used to be railroad tracks and thats where you park your car. This tunnel, along with the others on this section of the Clarksburg-Parkersburg line, was built between 1853 and 1854 by the Northwestern Virginia RR, technically an independent company but essentially financed by the B&O. The full line was opened between Grafton and Parkersburg in 1857. There are many alleged reasons for its weight in paranormal activity. One tragedy began with three men working on the tracks inside the tunnel in the 1800s or early 1900s. A train approached them at high speeds and very little warning. One man escaped to a cubbyhole unscathed. Another was supposedly cut in half by the train. And a third was dragged about 75 feet trapped under the train, causing it to derail. He didn't survive. Another story associated with Flinderation, deals with the infamous K*K. Supposedly, in the mid 1900s, they brought many of their victims to the tunnel. It became a regular lynching spot for them. It was officially "shut down" and the tracks were torn up in the 1990s. Today, it's a part of the North Bend rail trail. One last story involves the cemetery located on top of the tunnel. On Travel Channel's Ghost Stories, a claim was made that some of the coffins fell through the roof of the tunnel, causing it to be patched on more than one occasion. There were some insinuations that a body may have become caught between the repaired tunnel roof and the cemetery after their coffin fell through. Can't say for sure if there is any truth to it. Then, the K*K also took victims there to do lynching and such. The reason for shutting down the tunnel involve people hearing phantom train whistles and seeing the ghost train that continues to "travel" through it. This tunnel has a lot of hidden history. Today, it is part of the RailTrail, but the train whistle can still be heard. Other reports include unknown lights, phantom mists or fog, footsteps, orbs, growling, screeching, sobbing, sound of metal scraping against metal, voices and various apparitions including that of a little boy and girl who are also often heard talking and giggling. About once a month the Mountain State Spirit Seekers Society team conducts a small investigation at this location just outside of Salem WV. http://www.strangeusa.com/Viewlocation.aspx?id=10735
