Studying or working abroad can be transformative—but it can also introduce unexpected mental and emotional challenges.
New environments, cultural differences, and varying access to care can all impact traveler well-being abroad.
In Honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re spotlighting an often-overlooked aspect of duty of care: preparing travelers for the mental and emotional realities of international engagement.
In this co-authored thought piece, guest contributor Marcia W. Henisz, joins On Call International's Chief Medical Officer, Dr Michelle Nathan, to share practical guidance for organizations supporting global operations and programs.
Key considerations for supporting mental health abroad:
• Recognize unique stressors of international travel, including cultural adjustment and identity-based risks
• Understand variability in global mental health care, including access, stigma, and medication restrictions
• Encourage pre-departure wellness planning for travelers managing existing conditions
• Equip key trip stakeholders with tools to support traveler well-being in real time
• Partner with a trusted emergency assistance resource to help ensure access to timely care, referrals, and crisis support
As global mobility grows, so does the responsibility to support the full well-being of travelers—not just their physical safety.
