Join Solidarity Rising this Thursday, June 4th, at 6 pm at Salem City Hall (93 Washington St.) in support of Ranked Choice voting!
The Salem City Council is having a committee meeting to discuss the final language for a Home Rule Petition on Ranked Choice Voting (RCV). After the meeting, we will walk to Notch Brewery and Taproom (283R Derby St, Salem) to plan for North Shore Pride.
You will NOT need to sign up in advance to give public comment. You can just come up to the podium during the public comment section of the meeting.
Not sure what to say? Here are some tips:
- RCV means people’s preferences are more represented in the election results, which means more people get to be involved in the democratic process
- RCV means you can vote for your actual favorite candidate, and not settle for the one that you think is most “viable.”
- Winners get a majority of votes, instead of crowded primaries where the “winner” might only have 25% of the vote, for example
- RCV saves time and money, since Salem wouldn’t need to have primary elections
- RCV discourages negative campaigning, since candidates want your 2nd choice even if your 1st choice is an opponent
- RCV increases voter turnout across communities that use it
- Speak to examples of ranking systems in your life - ranking the schools your child will go to (Salem School Choice), professional school matching (medical schools, etc.). Even fraternity and sorority rushing usually has a ranked-choice element.
- Have you ever lived in a place that uses Ranked Choice Voting? Talk about what that was like for you.
