June!

And I will let that exclamation mark tell it all – for now.

Morning was a surprise to me; yesterday was cool and clear, rain was the last thing I would think of, and yet when I awoke this morning, the pleasant sound of rainfall greeted me. A fine type of weather to usher in June, some might suggest. But when we consider that June is but a part of a season of new life, what could be more appropriate than a gentle life-giving shower?

Rain ceased early in the day, and morning was one of loose ragged clouds and moist breeze. Dark clouds amased frequently against which the white edged trees stood out in fine contrast. The rain seemed to have revived the oriole, who sang more frequently and volubly than I have heard them since arriving home.

Afternoon brought a clearing of the sky; the sun came out and shone hotly; the breeze was brisk and cool. A yellowbird sang; and even a robin was not to be outdone, for he sang loudly and strong. The wren was not around all day long.

The robins in the spout left today; whither I have no idea. How quickly they mature!

A letter came from C – which was the first I had heard for some time for him- I spent the afternoon pleasantly in answering it.

It takes a fine, unusual sort of courage to have faith at a time like this. That is why the common run of artist finds relief in painting pictures of pessimism and gloom. They are following the line of least resistance. But they will be deliberately discarded and forgotten by mankind when a better time comes—and rightly so. For us, the Sibelius 5th Symphony (an act of Faith) is of far more importance than the Great War of 1914-18, which occurred at the same time. In time that war, and its offspring the present struggle, will be but an unpleasant memory; eventually it will have no more emotional significance to our descendants than the Napoleonic wars have for us. But the Beethoven 5th and the Sibelius 5th, will continue to grow in power and significance.

Thank you for sharing your artistic vision and your thoughtful words as you traveled through this life, Charles E Burchfield.

It seems to me I have entered upon a new period in my life – a new way of thinking about life, the universe and even about God – and with it the inability to get back in memory to earlier periods. I can see a barefoot boy coming up the painter road on a hot summer afternoon, or a young father striding along elatedly along under May trees; but I can’t feel like them.
