I know, I know - so much coming out of Washington seems to fly at 100 miles an hour in and out of the news as new horrible events take precedence. But, we should focus on something we can urge our lawmakers to address: slush funds. They are a national disgrace. The idea is to allow for members of Congress to help other candidates. While several members do exactly that, too many use the money for membership fees to country clubs and tickets to Broadway shows. Public service is a public trust. Leadership PACs - as they function today - are often a betrayal of that trust.
At a minimum, we should demand quarterly disclosure of all monies and expenses for every Leadership PAC. Every member who uses the money for personal expenses should face the scrutiny with which the GOP tortures poor people: drug testing, fingerprinting, stop and frisk for no reason other than being a slush fund ju**ie, jumping through hoops to vote, risk of eviction and most importantly - loss of a job.
