90,000 people in Marion and Polk County depend on SNAP. In two days, because of failures at the highest level of our federal government, our neighbors, our family members, and our friends, will not receive their November SNAP food assistance. Of those 90,000, almost 30,000 are children, about 9,000 are seniors and about 17,000 are disabled.

Individuals and organizations are helping where they can, including Cherriots, the public transit provider for the region. Beginning November 1, 2025, riders traveling to and from food banks and food pantries may ride at no cost; just tell the driver where you are going when you board the bus and your ride is free.

Our mission is "creating community connections." Sometimes that means connecting you from Point A to Point B, and sometimes it means connecting you to the resources you need at no cost to you because it’s what’s needed.

Tomorrow, I will be answering your questions about the service enhancements Cherriots is proposing over at r/SALEM.

Our proposed service enhancements are decades overdue and would *finally* begin to provide the level of service we need.

Tonight's board meeting ran late so I caught the 10 pm bus home. You might not realize it, but that is truly remarkable. My ride home would not have been possible when I first joined the board in July 2019 because our buses stopped running at 9 pm. Now, thanks to state investment, our buses run until 11 pm.

13 other people boarded the bus with me.

The City of Silverton is considering different ways they can enhance public transit services in and around the city. Please take a few minutes to let them know what you would like to see!

The City of Silverton is exploring ways to enhance our local transportation services, and we want to hear from you! In collaboration with AMMA Transit and Jarret Walker, we are conducting a thorough transit study to evaluate our current system, identify service gaps, and develop solutions to better meet the needs of our community.

At present, Silverton offers two main public transit options: the Silver Trolley, which operates Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 4:45 PM, and the Cherriots 20X Bus, which provides multiple daily trips between Silverton and Salem. While these services are valuable, we know there are some limitations.

We're considering several service enhancements, including extended hours of operation, Saturday service, broader route boundaries, and more flexible ride-booking options through a mobile app or by phone. We’re also evaluating the potential for a fixed route connecting to Mt. Angel, or a shared ride service that accommodates multiple passengers.

We invite you to take a few moments to complete our community survey and share your thoughts and ideas. You may either scan the QR code, use the link in our bio, or stop by our office (410 N Water Street) for a paper copy.

About Me

I currently serve as the board president of Cherriots, Salem, Oregon’s public transit provider. I am committed to increasing the livability of the Salem area through more reliable, equitable, and affordable public transit. For my day job I am the Justice Reinvestment Program Manager for the Oregon Criminal Justice Commission. I have held previous jobs with the Oregon Legislature, Bonneville Power Administration, the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, and the Association of Oregon Counties.

I am a graduate of Oregon State University’s Master of Public Policy program and I have a bachelor’s degree in history from Brigham Young University. In the past, I’ve served on the Oregon Citizens’ Utility Board and the Salem City Council Public Transit Committee. My wife, two daughters, and I live in Salem. Together, we enjoy going to the farmers market, hiking, gardening, and we have a love/hate relationship with remodeling our house.
