Happy Friday East Salem Patriots!!!!

If you ever want to know what your children are learning about in music, then just check out this bulletin board located on the table just inside the East Salem music room.

This is our "What Stuck with You" board. On this board are cards for every grade level that tell what your student has been learning about during their most recent music class.

Here are what the music classes just finished learning about last week.

Here are pictures of Mrs. Farrell's 2nd grade grade students working on their journal page for December!!!!

We have been learning about musical terms in Second Grade this school year. The first two we learned about were - tempo and mood. We reviewed those terms to use for our December journal page.

But we also added a new musical term for this month's page - the word: pitch. We knew what the word pitch meant in baseball, but in music, we discovered that the word pitch meant the highness and/or lowness of the music.

As we listened to "The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" by Peter Tchaikovsky, we thought about the tempo, mood and pitch of the music. We then wrote our answers on our journal page.

Hey East Salem 3rd Grade Patriots!!!!
Here's a quick peek into what we are beginning to work on during music.

We are learning how to play Bucket Drums!!!

Home Depot graciously donated the beautiful orange buckets we will be using for playing the drums.

Our drum sticks haven't come in yet, but we are still having so much fun learning how to play the buckets with dowel rods.

4th grade students have been learning all about music history during their music classes so far this school year.

The composer we talked about during their most recent music class was George Frideric Handel.

Handel lived during the Baroque period of music.

We learned about all Handel's life and his music. We discovered that Handel's father did not allow musical instruments in the house when Handel was a small boy. We also found out that a small clavier was snuck into the attic for Handel to practice on. The strings of the clavier were covered with cloths so Handel's father would not be able to hear him practice.

We discovered that Handel wrote a song we hear a lot during December. That song is called "The Hallelujah Chorus".

We also listened and learned about Handel's composition called "The Water Music". This music was composed in 1714 for King George 1st of England - for a festival held on the River Thames.

It was said that there were so many boats on the river that day that the "the whole river was, in a manner, covered up."

The 4th grade students then drew pictures of what they thought the river may have looked like that day.

We have been learning about musical terms in Second Grade this school year. The first two we learned about were - tempo and mood.

Then, like last month, as we listened to November's piece of music: the "William Tell Overture" by Gio Rossini, we answered several questions about the tempo and the mood of the piece of music.
(By the way, November's piece of music is also known as theme to " The Lone Ranger".)
