Oregon Department of Forestry Growing & protecting Oregon's forests for the many benefits they provide.

The Oregon Department of Forestry protects 16 million acres of Oregon's public and private forestlands from wildfire, manages 800,000+ acres of Oregon's state forests, enforces the Oregon Forest Practices Act and other rules and laws to conserve Oregon's forests, assists private forestland owners, and works with urban communities to help sustain Oregon's most "lived-in" forests - trees in urban areas, city parks, neighborhoods, and open spaces.

It's going to get hot, hot, HOT this weekend so be prepared. Check local weather and fire restrictions before bringing any fire hazards onto the landscape. Knowing if your area is in a fire weather watch or a red flag warning could help you prevent the next wildfire in Oregon.

The Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) launched a new round of funding through its Small Forestland Grant Program to help landowners reduce wildfire risk before and after the 2026 fire season.

“By investing in the Oregon Department of Forestry’s Small Forestland Grant Program, we aren't just preparing for the next fire season, we are securing Oregon’s future,” said Mike Kroon, Forest Resources Division Deputy Chief.

The Oregon Department of Forestry’s Federal Forest Restoration Program and the Ochoco National Forest completed a first-of-its-kind reforestation project within the Crazy Creek Fire burn area, planting and protecting more than 74,000 ponderosa pine seedlings across 424 acres of federal forestland after the area burned in 2024.

The Crazy Creek planting project is the first reforestation effort on federal forestland in Oregon to be completed through a state-written and state-administered planting contract under the Good Neighbor Authority (GNA). The project demonstrates how state and federal partners can use GNA to expand restoration capacity and accelerate recovery following severe wildfires.

The contract included eight units with crews planting ponderosa pine seedlings and installing rigid Vexar netting to reduce browsing damage from elk and deer.

Stop in at ODF’s Tillamook Forest Center (TFC) this weekend and take part in one of their weekend educational events.

Tea Time—Tonics of the Forest: Join naturalists for a talk about teas from the leaves, roots, and flowers of plants that can be found in the Tillamook State Forest, then sample some of the concoctions and vote for your favorite! Join in the fun both Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The talk runs about 30 minutes.

The TFC seeks to help you build a deeper connection with Oregon’s forests through experience and exploration. Through innovative programs and hands-on exhibits in the 13,500 square-foot center, visitors can gain a greater understanding about what a forest is, how it works, and forest history.

The Tillamook Forest Center is located in the heart of the Tillamook State Forest at 45500 Wilson River Highway (OR-6). The TFC summer hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. They are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. See their website for more on their special events, exhibits and area trails. https://www.tillamookforestcenter.org

The new outdoor learning pavilion at the Oregon Department of Forestry’s Astoria District Office was completed on May 27. The 16-by-24-foot timber structure is now open for community use as part of the adjacent demonstration forest managed by ODF.

The local chapter of Oregon Women in Timber (OWIT) led the fund-raising efforts for the outdoor learning pavilion. Their goal was to commemorate the 65th anniversary of Clatsop County Forestry Day, established in 1960, serving every sixth-grade student in the county through an annual forestry field tour. That day is now a two-day event that has been hosted by ODF for the last several years.

Several local area businesses provided in-kind donations of labor and materials for the outdoor learning pavilion that included site prep, a concrete pad, and construction of the structure.

People from around Oregon learned last week in Eugene how vital a healthy urban forest is for human health. Presenters at the Oregon Urban Forestry Conference explained how a healthy tree canopy does everything from reducing premature births to alleviating depression and lowering the risk of death from cardiovascular disease.

ODF and the US Forest Service sponsor the annual conference, which is put on by the non-profit Oregon Community Trees. This year's conference was the best attended ever, drawing in urban foresters, arborists and tree care workers as well as public health professionals.

Through the late night patrols and early morning briefings, ODF remains committed to protecting Oregon's forests by responding to a fire as fast as possible. As the largest fire department in Oregon, our goal is to minimize cost and loss through aggressive initial attack, extinguishing as many fires as possible while they are still small.

As ODF protection districts begin to declare fire season, help your local firefighters by checking your local fire restrictions before bringing a potential spark on the landscape. https://www.oregon.gov/odf/fire/pages/restrictions.aspx

Happy National Trails Day! Celebrate by hitting the trails! ODF manages more than 146 miles of non-motorized trails in Oregon’s state forests including the trails to Butte Creek Falls in the Santiam State Forests. The best part is all ODF trails are free to use year-round. Also, today only, you can park for free at Oregon State Parks trailheads and at U.S. Forest Service trails in national forests. For more information see ODF’s website for state forests trails at: https://www.oregon.gov/odf/recreation/pages/nonmotorizedtrails.aspx

Oregon's State Forester, Kacey KC, had the opportunity to learn more and tour ODF's new Multi-Mission Aircraft (MMA). This aircraft is a significant advancement in how the agency detects, monitors, and responds to incidents across Oregon.

As wildfire seasons grow longer and more complex, continued investments like the MMA will be critical. In the coming weeks, we'll continue to post about the new MMA, it's updated capabilities, and how it is best serving Oregon.

Around 200 people are gathered in Eugene today to learn about the connections between trees and human health, and humans and tree health. ODF and the USDA Forest Service sponsor the conference, the largest urban forestry conference in Oregon. The non-profit Oregon Community Trees organizes and staffs the event.

Eleven different speakers are giving presentations. Keynote speaker Geoffrey Donovan is presenting his research into how changes in urban tree canopy directly impact human death rates and even premature births. See the full lineup of speakers at https://www.oregoncommunitytrees.org/2026-conference
