Thank you Senator Joan B. Lovely & State Representative Paul Tucker for taking the time to listen to our concerns and experiences. We will be following up with you both and continue these conversations and keep you informed on our future projects.

The Salem Youth Commission participated at this years The 84 Movement #kickbuttsday2021 event. We met with youth across the state, and attended Legislative meetings and celebrated the work of all the chapters over the last year.

Great Job Justin, Jeffrey and Michael!!

Great to meet with Salem Youth Commission members Michael, Jeffrey and Justin for a Kick Butts Day discussion on dangers of smoking and va**ng, their efforts in the community to raise awareness, and impacts of #COVID19 on smoking among youth. Congratulations to Laura Assade for her nomination as Adult Advisor of the Year! #NorthShoreMA #MAPoli

Thank you @salemacademycs for honoring the @salemyouthcommission with this award.

Our mission is to provide an advocacy and information platform for youth representatives to get more engaged in City issues, helping to recommend new programs and events, craft initiatives in partnerships with other City boards and departments, local non-profits, and businesses, and suggest ideas for new policies or regulations for the City to consider.

Having the opportunity to work with young people at SACS and from across the city has been such a great experience.

We look forward to the continued work that lies ahead. Thank you. @ Salem, Massachusetts

We only need 15 more surveys filled out to help us collect information about our Mapping project.

Please take the survey and share.

The Salem Youth Commission @the84_movement chapter needs your help.

Over the last two years we have been able to participate in their annual social justice projects around the use of to***co amongst our young people. This year our focus is around identifying trends, and areas in our community and other surrounding communities where such said products are being sold.

We want to collect 50 responses from our young people in Salem (we won’t be mad if more people take it though😊). We want to know about your experience especially during these times of how to***co is affecting our youth.

Please consider taking this quick survey

“The negative health effects from va**ng are now clearly established, so I hope all Salem kids who might use these potentially deadly devices will consider bringing it in for the buy-back,” said Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll. “By coupling the gift card with cessation services, we’re also hoping to help youth successfully break the va**ng habit for good, too. I’m grateful to North Shore Medical Center, North Shore Community Health, our Salem Public Schools school nurses, the Salem, Massachusetts Board of Health, and the Salem Youth Commission, all of whom had a role in making this exciting pilot possible.”- Kim Driscoll

Those looking for more information about the program can contact their school nurses or call the Teen Health Center at 978-740-1220.

#SalemMA Launches V**e Pen and E-Cigarette Buy-Back for Youth

Salem students can get $50 for participating and breaking the habit

The City of Salem, in partnership with North Shore Community Health, Inc. and North Shore Medical Center, is launching a one-year pilot program of a new initiative to encourage high school age youth to give up va**ng.

Starting on March 2nd, Salem residents who attend Salem High School, Salem Academy Charter School New Liberty Innovation School of Salem, and Salem Prep High school can bring their e-cigarette device or v**e pen to the Teen Health Center at Salem High School (Suite 127) and receive a $50 gift card to Target, Market Basket, Stop & Shop, or other area businesses.

To receive the gift card, students must also participate in and successfully complete four va**ng cessation support sessions. The sessions are 45 minutes long and will take place in the Teen Health Center.

I’m grateful to North Shore Medical Center, North Shore Community Health, our Salem Public Schools school nurses, the Salem, Massachusetts Board of Health, and the Salem Youth Commission, all of whom had a role in making this exciting pilot possible.”

Those looking for more information about the program can contact their school nurses or call the Teen Health Center at 978-740-1220.

Please follow me on Twitter @MaYouthCourts to get information and updates on important MA youth justice reform legislation! We desperately need reform! #H1364 #AnActtoFundYouthCourts
Hello! I thought this group might be interested in helping this cause... it would really help to get some young people to voice support for an important juvenile justice reform bill over the next few days. ..... Please help to get more youth court restorative justice programs established in MA. Although there are over 1100 youth courts nationwide, there is only 1 in Massachusetts (New Bedford/Fall River). It will only take 5 minutes to help this in a really meaningful way. Bill H1364 (bipartisan), An Act to Fund Youth Courts, is building momentum in the State House. https://malegislature.gov/Bills/191/H1364 in the field to actually get it passed. This bill would allocate money to help youth who commit first-time low-level crimes or misdemeanors from getting a criminal record (which can keep them from getting into college or the military). Instead, they would be assigned a mentor, attend restorative conferences/meetings, get support for themselves and their families, and attend a hearing by a jury of peers (“youth court”) to find out how much and what kind of community service to complete. You can support this bill - which will be at hearing at some point within the week or so by the following: 1. Please share this - especially with people of influence 2. Please write a group email telling your name, town/city and why you support H1364, An Act to Fund Youth Courts. If you have a personal story because you have dealt with these issues professionally or personally, please give specifics. If you have no direct experience, you may reference that youth courts: - keep adolescents, who often act impulsively or out of peer pressure, from meeting more serious criminals in the criminal justice system; - give support to youth who have not had adequate resources or support in the past; - lead to much lower recidivism rates Please send your email to these members of the Judiciary Committee: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] For more info on youth courts, please see: www.globalyouthjustice.org THANK YOU so, so much for your support. It really makes a difference!
