You can start your go bag with the basics--water, a first-aid kit, flashlight, batteries, extra clothes, and important documents--and include more items as you think of them.

Your car is a great place to keep a go bag because many items come in handy on a regular basis, especially if you hike, bike, camp, or have small children.

Keeping a go bag in your car also means you don't have to go back home to retrieve it. If you do keep your go bag at home make sure it's in a location where you can safely grab it if your home is damaged, such as near an exit.

You can have multiple go bags: one for home, car, work, a friend or relative's house...having multiple bags means you don't have to go home to have your essentials.

But if you don't have one, start there. If you have kids, have them help you and you can talk about what you're including, why, and your family communication plan and what they should do in case of emergency if they are at school or a friend's house.

A communication plan ensures that everyone in your household knows how to regroup in an emergency, whether that's how to communicate that you're safe or where to meet.

This month we are helping Marion County prepare for wildfire season.

Tip #1: Have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts so you increase your chances of getting them as soon as possible.

Tip #2: Make an emergency plan with your household.

Tip #3: Make sure your insurance policies and personal documents, like ID, are up to date. Make copies and keep them in a secure password-protected digital space.

Tip #4: Manage your defensible space.

Tip #5: Know your evacuation zones. You may have to evacuate quickly due to a wildfire. Learn your evacuation routes, practice with household, pets and identify where you will go.

Follow the instructions from local authorities. They will provide the latest recommendations based on the threat to your community and appropriate safety measures.

Tip #2: Make an emergency plan with your household.

Make sure everyone in your household knows and understands what to do if you need to quickly evacuate.

Don’t forget a plan for the office, kids’ daycare, school and anywhere you frequent. Update contact information with all locations anytime it changes.

Make sure your family has each other's phone numbers memorized or written down in a safe place.
