Please remember the implementation of emergency temporary workplace health and safety requirements for both prevention of heat illness and protection against wildfire smoke. Oregon OSHA adopted the heat illness prevention rule, which took effect July 8, and the protection from wildfire smoke rule, which took effect Aug. 9. Both rules remain in effect for 180 days. A message from OSHA Administrator, Michael Wood, regarding best practices for cleaning up ash: gently dampen it - do not use a pressure washer, that will generate dust before it wets things down. Once damp, use a HEPA-equipped vacuum or scoop it up. It is ok to move the dampened material with a relatively low pressure air blower. DO NOT use a backpack style leaf blower to clean up dry ash and dust from the wildfire. You may use a broom, but still dampen the material. A push broom may help avoid stirring up more dust.

For additional information regarding safety for outdoor workers, please visit this OHA web page:

Salem, OR — State workplace and public health officials are urging employers to stop or delay outdoor work activity where they can and take other reasonable steps to protect workers when air quality reaches the “unhealthy” zone, or worse.
