After much thought and consideration, I’ve made the decision that I intend to seek another term as Mayor of the City of Salem in 2027.

Serving as Mayor has been one of the greatest honors of my life. I’m proud of the progress we’ve made together, but I also know there is more work to do and more opportunity ahead for Salem.

Public service isn’t always easy, and there are certainly challenges that come with the job. But I continue to believe deeply in this community, its people, and what Salem can become when we work together.

Over the coming months, there will be plenty of time to talk about what we’ve accomplished, the challenges still in front of us, and my vision for Salem’s future. For now, I simply wanted to share my decision with the community I’m so fortunate to serve.

After much consideration, I’m ready to keep working.

I intend to run for Mayor of Salem in 2027.

Thank you, Salem, for the trust you’ve placed in me and for the opportunity to serve.

The City of Salem is evaluating pedestrian and bicycle improvements as part of its Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) grant application. Your feedback will help identify needs for sidewalks, pedestrian lighting, and bicycle facilities to improve safety, connectivity, and mobility throughout the community. This survey takes approximately two minutes to complete. Submission deadline is Friday, August 28, 2026.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of this public servant.

Larry Frazier, Badge #221, was appointed to the Salem Police Department on January 2, 1979. After serving several years as a patrol officer, he was assigned to the Detective Division, where he dedicated the majority of his 22-year career to investigating cases and serving the community. Larry retired on January 26, 2001, after more than two decades of honorable service to the City of Salem.

During his career, Larry served under three Chiefs of Police: Chief Krueger, Chief Harold Blank, and Chief John Duncan. Throughout those years, he witnessed significant advancements in law enforcement, from carrying the Smith & Wesson Model 60 revolver to the adoption of the G***k 21 semi-automatic pistol. He also experienced the transition from traditional dispatch operations to computer-aided dispatch and the establishment of Salem's fully integrated 911 communications center.

The Salem Police Department proudly recognizes Detective Larry Frazier for his dedicated service, professionalism, and commitment to the citizens of Salem. His contributions to the department and the community will not be forgotten.

Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the Frazier family during this difficult time.

I was very happy to be elected today to the Southern Illinois Mayor’s Association Board of Directors; as well as Mayor John Lewis of Mt. Vernon. We hope to provide a voice for our region.
