If North Fork park is too crowded or you can't find parking, go back to Highway 22 and take Gates Hill road to Salmon Falls or Bear Creek park.
If you already purchased parking at North Fork, your day pass will work at those parks, too.

Remember, the red line on North Fork means no parking. Work continues in the slide area and there are dump trucks and other construction traffic.

Stay alert and drive carefully!

Let's talk about cooking outdoors! Whether you're cooking around the campfire or grilling out in your backyard or a park, these tips will help keep you safe.

1. Know before you go: More than 90 percent of forest fires are caused by humans. Consult the campground, park, or forest website before you pack to learn what fire restrictions might be in place. If conditions are windy, protect your fire to prevent sparks from being spread. Never start a fire during thunderstorms.

2. Clear the area: Campfires should be 15-25 feet from tents, overhead branches, and other flammable items. Campers should keep a 3-foot distance from the fire or grill. Leash pets away from the clear area.

3. Manage your fire: Always keep fires inside fire rings or grills. Don't use lighter fluid or other fuels on the fire. Keep a shovel and water nearby in case the fire gets too large. Don't leave a fire unattended, ever. A fire can double in size in just 30 seconds!

4. Drown your fire when you're done: Make a "soup" in the fire pit, drowning the coals or logs with water, then stirring. Repeat until the water is no longer warm. Never bury a fire with dirt or sand only—it can reignite.

Remember, at Marion County parks charcoal can only be used in park BBQ grills. If you want to BYO grill, make it propane or gas fueled grills.

Thanks so much to everyone who brought items to our free Shred & E-waste event! We had more than 250 people show up and kept 8,000 pounds of paper and electronics out of the trash!

Leave No Trace principles are vital in areas recovering from wildfire. Here's how you can help our wild areas recover as you visit this summer:

🥾Leave what you found--Don't take anything from nature with you, not even rocks or flowers.
🥾Share the trail--Be courteous to others.
🥾Pack in, pack out--Take everything with you when you leave, even trash and recyclables. Taking these items home reduces strain on parks during the busy season.
🥾Leave wildlife WILD--Don't feed it, pet it, or take it out of its environment.
🥾Be prepared--Know the area, the weather conditions, and be ready for an emergency. The people who will have to rescue you are volunteers.
🥾Be careful with fire--Only start fires in designated areas and always check for burn bans first. Thoroughly drown any campfire before leaving it unattended.
🥾Stay on trails--The forest recovers from the floor up. If we damage the small vegetation, it's harder for the larger stuff to come back.

Rain gardens act like tiny water treatment facilities. Water gathers, soaks into soil and is taken up by plants. Plants and soils filter nutrients, sediment and toxic materials before they reach waterways.

Before you get started, learn how water moves on your property and choose a site that will slow it down. Don't pick a spot that already stays wet after rain. Stay at least 10 feet away from foundations.

Select plants that can handle dry summers with little to no extra water or fertilizer after two to three years after planting. Keep stormwater out of a new rain garden for about a year so plants and soils can settle.

Aim for low maintenance, but expect routine care: weeding, pruning, mulching and sometimes moving plants that don’t tolerate wet-and-dry cycles.

All open flames are prohibited at Marion County campsites and picnic shelters, including charcoal BBQ grills.

Gas and propane grills are still allowed.
