Mental health is an important part of overall health for children and teens. During Mental Health Awareness Month (MHAM) this May, we encourage you to share information and resources that support young people and their communities with mental health needs.

Here are some key messages from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) about how supportive families and communities can help youth build strong mental health.

- Teach children and teens coping skills so they take charge of their mental health.
- Know the signs of mental health issues for youth. Getting help early can save lives.
- Talk about mental health early and often. Open conversations can help young people understand their feelings.
- Build supportive relationships and environments that help youth handle stress in healthy ways. Good mental health helps children and teens practice self-care and face challenges with confidence.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Join the Oregon Child Support Program in observing National Mental Health Awareness Month (MHAM) this May. This month helps raise awareness about how important mental health is to our overall health and well-being. As we observe MHAM, we acknowledge how mental health affects the families we serve and each of us as individuals.

Mental health is important for family stability, child development, and handling life challenges. Whether we’re working directly with participants or supporting our co-workers, mental well-being is a key part of the work we do every day.

Throughout May, we will share resources and tools to help both our participants and employees. We will highlight:
- Resources for families and children
- Crisis lines and mental health hotlines in Oregon and nationwide
- Local organizations and services that offer mental health support
- De-escalation techniques and trauma-informed practices for tough conversations

This is the first message of a series that will offer tips, guidance and tools to use both at work and in your personal life.

Here at the Oregon Child Support Program, we help families establish parentage for their children and get them the support that they need. How can we help? We are available to help you enroll for our services, gather necessary information, and provide free genetic testing upon request as we work with the courts to update your child’s birth record.

If you have questions or need help addressing parentage, visit our website or follow the link in our bio to learn more.

Here at the Oregon Child Support Program, we help families establish parentage for their children and get them the support that they need. Under Oregon law, a spouse of a person who gives birth is automatically considered the child’s legal parent, even if they are not the genetic parent. This highlights why establishing parentage matters.

April is Second Chance Awareness Month. Many parents who are reentering society face many barriers that have significant financial and legal challenges, including child support debt that may have accumulated during incarceration. Our team is here to assist with:
• Modification Support: Helping incarcerated parents navigate child support modifications to reflect their current financial situation.
• Reentry Resources: Connecting parents with employment, legal assistance, and parenting support upon release.
• Family Engagement: Encouraging positive communication between parents and children when safe and appropriate.

If you or someone you know needs assistance with child support while incarcerated or during reentry, visit our Parents in Custody page to learn more. http://oregonchildsupport.gov/incarceration
