Did you know that one third of all boating accidents in Oregon are alcohol related?

Impaired judgment, slower reaction times, and reduced coordination can turn a day on the water into a dangerous situation.

Drink less to keep everyone safe, whether you're steering or just a passenger.

"New OHA rules endanger county staff, program participants, visitors, and neighbors," said Commissioner Danielle Bethell. “It is unacceptable that OHA refuses reasonable safety protections. We will not stop fighting to ensure our staff and the residents in these facilities they serve are safe from the harm OHA’s policies would needlessly cause."

Today, Marion County filed a formal rulemaking petition with the Oregon Health Authority (OHA), asking the agency to reverse a series of administrative rule changes that endanger staff and residents at licensed mental health residential treatment facilities.

The petition follows a June 29 letter to OHA leadership and an August 14 meeting between OHA and multiple counties that did not result in needed commitments from OHA.

Back-to-school mornings are coming. Is your family’s sleep schedule ready?

If summer has meant later nights and slower mornings, now is a good time to start easing kids back into their school-year routine.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends helping kids adjust to earlier bedtimes a week or two before school starts. A few things that can help:

• Set a consistent bedtime and wake-up time.
• Make changes gradually rather than all at once.
• Create a simple, calming bedtime routine.
• Turn off electronic devices well before bedtime.

A little preparation now can make those first school mornings easier.

What’s the hardest part of getting back into a school routine at your house: bedtime or waking up?

Summer evenings are made for backyard barbecues, camping trips, and time outside. They're also when mosquitoes are most active.

Most people who get West Nile virus don't become seriously ill, but some can develop severe complications, especially adults over 50 and people with weakened immune systems.

A few simple steps can help protect you and your family:
🦟 Use insect repellent.
👕 Wear long sleeves and pants when mosquitoes are active.
💧 Empty standing water around your home each week to help reduce mosquito breeding.

Enjoy your summer. Just don't forget the bug spray.

A simple blood test during pregnancy can help protect your baby.

Cases of congenital syphilis are increasing across Oregon, but early screening and treatment can help prevent serious health problems for babies.

If you're pregnant, talk with your prenatal care provider about syphilis screening.

Screening is recommended:
• At your first prenatal visit
• Around 28 weeks of pregnancy
• At delivery

If you test positive, treatment is available and can help protect both you and your baby.

Great public health doesn't happen by accident. It takes dedication, collaboration, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

We're proud to share that Marion County Health & Human Services has successfully maintained national accreditation through the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). There are only 420 accredited local health departments in the nation.

What does that mean for our community?

It means our Public Health Division has demonstrated it meets rigorous national standards for quality and performance, while continuously working to improve the services that help keep our community healthy.

Every day, our Public Health team works to:

• Prevent disease and injury
• Respond to public health emergencies
