Early this afternoon SFD responded to a confirmed structure fire in the 800 block of Highland Ave. Chief Mason arrived on scene and reported heavy fire in the rear of the structure. The duty crew was able to bring the fire under control quickly but the structure sustained heavy damage. Three pets were transported to Adamson's Vet and three others were lost. Thanks to off duty personnel, Green FD, Perry FD, and Damascus FD for their responses. Special thanks to Salem PD for transporting the pets for treatment. Also to the kind resident who brought watermelon to the crews, it is a very hot day and it was very much appreciated.

Last night, SFD responded to the 1100 block of E.3rd St for a structure fire. The fire was initially reported to be on the back porch but did extend into the first floor of the residence. The residence sustained heavy damage to the first floor. One resident was treated on the scene and two cats were removed and treated. Thanks to our off duty personnel, Green, Winona, and Perry Fire for their mutual aid response. An investigator from the State Fire Marshal's office will be responding today for a routine investigation.

This afternoon, the Salem Fire Department responded to a potential structure fire incident located in the 400 block of Benton Road in Perry Township. Upon arrival, smoke was observed emanating from second-floor windows, and fire was subsequently discovered in the kitchen area. Engine 2 successfully brought the fire under control quickly. Appreciation is extended to Winona Fire, Damascus Fire, and Green Fire for their assistance.

🎆 FIREWORK SAFETY REMINDER – KNOW THE DISTANCES BEFORE YOU LIGHT! 🎆

🚨 REQUIRED MINIMUM SAFETY DISTANCES UNDER OHIO FIRE CODE:

🧨 Ground Fireworks (Firecrackers, Fountains, Ground Spinners, etc.)
➡️ Spectators must remain at least 50 FEET away.

🎇 Aerial Fireworks (Bottle Rockets, Roman Candles, Aerial Shells, Cakes, etc.)
➡️ Spectators must remain at least 150 FEET away.
➡️ Aerial fireworks must also be discharged at least 150 FEET from any structure or building.

⚠️ Due to lot sizes and closely spaced homes, there are very few locations within the City of Salem where the required 150-foot separation distance for aerial fireworks can be safely maintained. Residents are encouraged to carefully evaluate their property before discharging any aerial fireworks.

⚠️ Remember: If there is any doubt, MORE DISTANCE IS ALWAYS SAFER.

As we celebrate the holiday season, the Salem Fire Department would like everyone to enjoy fireworks safely and responsibly.

✅ Fireworks may only be discharged on private property with the express permission of the property owner.

❌ Fireworks may NOT be discharged:
• Indoors
• On public property or school property
• In streets, alleys, or roadways
• In parks, forests, or nature preserves
• During burn bans, fire weather watches, or Red Flag Warnings

👦 Children under 18 years of age are prohibited from handling or discharging consumer fireworks.

🐴 Fireworks may not be discharged within 150 feet of property housing livestock unless the livestock owner has been given at least five days written notice.

🌬️ If weather conditions become unsafe due to high winds, dry conditions, or other hazards, fireworks should be postponed.

🔥 Always:
• Read and follow all manufacturer’s instructions.
• Keep a water source such as a garden hose or extinguisher readily available.
• Never aim fireworks at people, vehicles, structures, or emergency personnel.
• Clean up all fireworks debris after use.
• Store fireworks in a cool, dry location away from heat sources.

The Salem Fire Department wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday. Please celebrate responsibly so that everyone can enjoy the festivities safely.

On June 25th, several of our members and members of SPD, were recognized by Mayor Dickey for their actions on an emergency call which resulted in a rescue and ultimately a life saved.
