On September 3, 2026, the Salem Police Department was contacted by the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office requesting assistance in locating a wanted fugitive.

Sergeant #102, who had prior knowledge of the wanted individual, conducted an investigation and successfully located the subject, identified as Wayne Quick.

Quick was apprehended without incident and taken into custody. He was subsequently transported to the Dent County Jail on a NO BOND warrant for the following offense:

-Failure to Appear – S*x Offender Present/Loitering Within 500 Feet of a School

Before the arrest, Sergeant #102 conducted additional investigative actions related to Quick’s compliance with s*x offender registration requirements. As a result of that investigation, additional charges related to alleged s*x offender registration violations have been submitted to the Dent County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review.

The Salem Police Department, Dent County Sheriff’s Office and Dent County Fire Protection District are on scene of an active vehicle/structure fire in the 700 block of South Pershing.

This photo is more than a picture of the men and women of the Salem Police Department. It represents a family, a family built on service, sacrifice, accountability, and a shared commitment to something greater than ourselves.

And our family extends far beyond the walls of our police department.

Every call we answer, every neighborhood we patrol, every child we encourage, every person we help, and every difficult situation we face is an opportunity to serve the people who have entrusted us with an incredible responsibility. That commitment to service isn’t simply something we say. 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.

We also understand that not everyone agrees with our police department, our decisions, or even law enforcement as a whole. We respect that. But disagreement does not change our responsibility to serve.

To those who wear the Salem Police Department uniform today:

And to those who may wear it tomorrow:

Salem police, along with FBI conducted a search in the cold case of Rosalee Byrd.

Today, the Salem Police Department concluded a joint operation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation as part of the ongoing investigation into the unsolved homicide of Rosalee Byrd.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the FBI, City of Salem staff—especially Brent with the Street Department—and our entire community for their assistance and support throughout today’s search efforts.

As a result of today’s investigative efforts, the Salem Police Department can confirm that positive progress has been made in this case. While the investigation remains active, our detectives continue to pursue all available evidence and leads.

We can also confirm that we have a suspect in this case. That individual knows who they are.

To that person: Now is the time to come forward and speak with our investigators about your involvement in this case.

The Salem Police Department, in coordination with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) – St. Louis Field Office, will conduct a joint search operation on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, along the walking trail between Rolla Road and the Salem Care Center.

This operation is part of an ongoing investigative effort related to a 2015 homicide case, which we believe will help solidify our case for prosecution.

To facilitate the search and ensure the focus of the investigation, the walking trail will be closed to public access from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

This announcement is being issued to make the community aware of the increased law enforcement presence and investigative activity in the area. There is no cause for public alarm. We respectfully ask community members to avoid the area during the operation and provide investigators with the space necessary to conduct their work.

The Salem Police Department appreciates the community’s understanding, cooperation, and continued support as we remain committed to seeking answers and pursuing justice for our community.
