We’re proud to announce we’ve taken delivery of our newest apparatus, Engine Company 4. The truck is a Pierce Saber specifically designed for our City by our Apparatus Committee. Strong work to the members of the committee designing this truck for our needs, and to Chief Dionne and the City for continuing to ensure we have the apparatus and equipment we need to provide the highest quality service to our residents and visitors.

This new truck will be in service in the next few weeks after in-house tool and equipment mounting and training is completed.

đźš‘ CELEBRATING EMS WEEK đźš’

Today joined Atlantic/Cataldo Ambulance crews to celebrate EMS Week. Established in 1974, EMS Week is meant to be a chance to recognize and celebrate EMS professionals across the country in all aspects. We’re fortunate to be able to work alongside a group of EMS professionals that uphold the same standards as we do to provide the highest quality service to the residents and visitors of Salem. Requests for medical aid make up approximately 60% of the department’s call volume and the working relationship between Local 172 members and Atlantic/Cataldo crews remains strong and fruitful.

Pictured are Local 172 members of Group 4, with the Salem Medic 6 crew, dropping off a cooler full of ice cream and other treats as a small token of appreciation to the crews during their cookout. Other photos included show a variety of incidents that Local 172 and Atlantic/Cataldo have worked together on over the years.

Time after time we continue to see the consequences of inadequate fire department staffing. This is an issue that plagues all of us in Massachusetts. We support our brothers and sisters of IAFF Local 841 New Bedford Firefighters as they fight to save Engine 9 and continue to provide a high quality service to their residents just as we do here in Salem.

The City of New Bedford is pushing a dangerous and false narrative. The facts do not support their claim, and they are trying to balance their budget on the backs of public safety.

City "leaders" are actually trying to argue that fewer firefighters responding to emergencies is somehow the right move. That is not just wrong, it is insulting to the taxpayers of New Bedford.

Reducing staffing is not a solution. It is a cut to public safety. Fewer firefighters means delayed operations, fewer rescues, and increased risk for both residents and the firefighters on the line.

You cannot ask firefighters to do more with less when lives are at stake.

The PFFM stands with New Bedford Firefighters Local 841, and we will continue to fight for safe staffing levels, because that is what protects the communities we swore an oath to.

On behalf of the membership of Local 172, we’d like to send our condolences to the family of Trooper Kevin Trainor and the Massachusetts State Police, who tragically gave his life in the line of duty earlier this morning.

Trooper Trainor was regarded by his colleagues as, “the one you wanted showing up for backup”. His commitment to public service and the events of this morning only support that regard.

Trooper Trainor is the brother of Local 172 member Firefighter Matthew Trainor. We echo the statement made by State Police Colonel Geoffrey Noble, Trooper Trainor saved lives this morning and will be remembered as a hero.
