The Western Virginia Regional Jail is a state-of-the-art jail facility of approximately 264,000 square feet with an original rated capacity for 605 inmates with another 416 beds double-bunked for a total of 1,021 inmates. It was built by the coalition of four localities that formed the Western Virginia Regional Jail—the counties of Franklin, Montgomery, and Roanoke and the city of Salem. Our facil

ity, which opened its doors on April 9, 2009, eliminated the overcrowded and potentially unsafe conditions that existed at the local jail facilities of the four partnering jurisdictions prior to the Western Virginia Regional Jail’s construction.

As National Correctional Officers Week comes to a close, we want to take a moment to look back on a week full of fun activities and well-deserved appreciation for our officers. Throughout the week, officers participated in several friendly competitions, including a baking contest, corn hole tournament, weightlifting competition, closest-to-the-pin challenge, free throw competition, and an RCACP donation drive.
Officers also enjoyed snack bars throughout the week, including ice cream delivered by the Services Commanders, along with random door prizes, a commemorative gift, and two Family Fun Night events. We were also happy to host our annual Health and Wellness Fair.
A big thank you goes out to our planning committee and generous community sponsors for helping make the week such a success. Most importantly, we want to thank our correctional officers for their hard work, dedication, and daily sacrifices.
