Coral Fungus (Clavaria zollingeri) is one of our most common fall fungi that begin to be seen around late summer. These fungi can be white to slightly orange in color and even yellow or purple. These fungi are not edible but are very neat too look at due to their similar look to coral that you would see on the oceans reefs.

Coming up on September 17th is Columbiana SWCD's Annual Meeting which will be hold at Jan-Paul Farms INC. on McCann Road. This event will cost $10 and will feature a dinner as well as a year in review presentation from SWCD staff.

The American Plum (Prunus Americana) is one of the best early fall forages for wildlife such as Whitetail deer, Cedar Waxwing, and even Wild Turkeys to name a few. This native plum normally begin to ripen towards the end of August into mid September in Ohio and typically is found in dense groves where it grows.

If you are looking for a fantastic wildlife tree to have on your property this is one of our personal favorites.

On October 14th at 5pm Columbiana SWCD will be hosting a Forestry Field Night Event! This event is held in partnership with The Ohio State University Extension to offer an event for landowners interested in managing their woodlands. Topics will include oak management, the basics to maintaining a healthy woodland, invasive species management, and timber stand improvement.

Tawny Cotton-grass (Eriophorum virginicum) is a threatened native wetland grass species that we have in Ohio.

This herbaceous perennial grass begins to form it cotton like bloom between the months of July and August. This grass prefers acidic moist soil areas such as bogs and peat meadows.

As this grass is threatened much of this is due to natural succession of these bogs and peat meadow areas. Through proper management of these natural areas this species may possibly be able to exist in the future within Ohio's landscape!

Today September 1st is the opener for the hunting season all across Ohio. We hope that everyone who gets to go out stays safe and enjoys the first day of the season.

Remember to check the Ohio Hunting and Trapping Regulations book for 2026-27 before going out into the field so you are up to date on all of the current regulations and recent regulation changes. Our office has current regulations in stock if you have yet to grab yourself a copy!

It is always neat to see conservation practices that have been implemented on properties all across the county. Featured is year one of a pollinator planting that was done of some slopes that were not able to be farmed due to them being highly erode able. By doing this we have created grassland nesting songbird habitat as well as habitat for our wild turkeys to utilize for foraging for insects.

Programs such as the Wildlife Habitat Initiative or Environmental Quality Incentives Program can be used to help with the planning and cost share funding that is provided to implement conservation projects like this.
