As of 10:00 AM on May 28, 2026, unincorporated Chaffee County is no longer under Stage 1 Fire Restrictions.

Recent moisture throughout the valley has helped improve local conditions and reduce immediate fire danger. We appreciate the community’s cooperation and awareness during the restriction period.

Although restrictions have been lifted, the Salida Fire Department strongly encourages everyone to continue exercising extreme caution when open burning, operating equipment that may create sparks, or lighting flames of any kind. Vegetation can still dry quickly, and fire danger can change rapidly in Colorado conditions.

Please continue to:
🔥 Never leave fires unattended
🔥 Fully extinguish campfires and burn piles
🔥 Use caution with trailers, chains, and equipment that may spark
🔥 Follow all local burn permit requirements and weather advisories

We appreciate everyone doing their part to help keep our community safe this fire season.

This is why training matters.

One moment you’re practicing scenarios, and the next you’re responding to that exact situation. We train hard so we’re prepared—because our community depends on it.

UPDATED 4/22/2026

🚨 Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) Alert – Wednesday, April 22 🚨

The Salida Fire Department is urging our community to remain on high alert today as a Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) has been issued for our area — the first of its kind in the areas history.

⚠️ Critical conditions include:
• Wind gusts up to 50 mph
• Relative humidity at or below 9%
• Highly receptive fire fuels (vegetation and materials that can easily ignite and rapidly spread fire)

These factors create an environment where fires can start easily and grow out of control very quickly.

🚫 Use extreme caution with anything that could spark a fire. Avoid activities that generate heat, sparks, or flames outdoors.

Your awareness and cooperation are critical in preventing wildfires during these dangerous conditions. Stay informed, stay prepared, and report any signs of smoke or fire immediately.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: [Salida, CO, April 18th, 2026]

On April 18, 2026 at approximately 0143 hours, the Salida Fire Department responded to a report of a recreational vehicle (RV) fire at the Salida RV Park, 6507 CR 102, Salida, Colorado.

Units arrived to find a recreational vehicle fully involved. Firefighters immediately initiated an aggressive fire attack, and the fire was brought under control at approximately 0205. One occupant was able to escape the structure.

The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation by the Salida Fire Department, the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control, and the Salida Police Department. The scene remains secured pending the outcome of that investigation.

Recreational vehicle fires are known to progress extremely rapidly, leaving little time for occupants to escape.

The Salida Fire Department extends its deepest condolences to the family and those affected.

No further information is available at this time.

Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
