While John Murphy may have been the first permanent settler in Salida, the town of Salida was laid out and plots were sold by David Curtis between 1908-1910. Curtis Street is named for David Curtis. Other settlers we will profile also appear on Salida street names. Drawing is of David Curtis’ Vaneless Windmill and Tank circa 1880.

John and Ellen Murphy were one of the founding families of Salida. He tried to deflect a pistol shot from an angry gold miner and took the ball in his lower left arm which had to be amputated. He settled a farm along the Stanislaus River and established a ferry business, called “Murphy’s Ferry”
