The commission, comprised of five members elected at large, selects one member each year to serve as mayor. The governing body is responsible for determining policy, and the city manager is responsible for the administration of the municipality. nd Humanities, City Manager's Office, Finance, Computer Technology, Community and Development Services, Community Relations, Fire, Human Resources, Municipal Court, Parks and Recreation, Police, Public Works, Utilities. The departments work together to serve the needs of Salina's citizens, and they aim to be the best performing municipality in Kansas.

In celebration of National Dog Day, we dug out a 19th century photograph of the Flanders’ family pooch. The dog belonged to Isabella Garrison Flanders (1843-1917) of Salina, KS. Unfortunately, we don’t know the name of this beloved family pet; however, we can provide you with some fun facts about dogs from the 1890s. The most popular dog breed in the United States was the St. Bernard. The “Salina Weekly Union” published a satirical article in 1897 about a shepherd incarcerated for life over the death of a chicken on his family’s farm. In 1899, several residents formed the Dog Protective Association to propose a decrease in the price of registration among other more self-serving ideas. A secondary society was established called the Hunting Dog Protective Association in order to crack down on thievery of the members’ dogs. In 1893, Canadian Margaret Marshall Saunders wrote “Beautiful Joe: the Autobiography of a Dog” from the perspective of a dog and their complex relationship with human beings.

The City of Salina Public Works Department has completed the limb pickup through the residential areas. If residents have questions, please call General Services at (785) 309-5750.

Since the windstorm on June 8th, Public Works staff have hauled 4502+ dump truck loads of limbs from residential properties and the Landfill has received over 10,518 tons of yard waste debris.

The City of Salina did not address private streets, alleys, or commercial properties as that responsibility belongs to the property owner.
