Monterey County Sheriff's Mounted Unit The Monterey County Sheriff's Mounted Unit is comprised of both sworn deputies and volunteers. Originally formed to help search for missing/lost people.

The unit participates in high visibility patrol, community policing, parades, and search and rescue operations. The widespread use of cell phones and GPS devices has reduced the need for mounted searches, While the traditional search and rescue unit using dogs, quads and ground pounders remain active we are more likley to be found providing assistance at the annual Wildflower event at Lake San Antonio, riding the trails at Toro Park or Fort Ord or showing off horses to kids at Farm Days, and similar events.
