The mission of the RCD is to conserve and improve our natural resources, integrating the demand for environmental quality with the needs of agricultural and urban users. The RCD is guided by a Board of Directors who are appointed by the county board of supervisors to serve voluntarily and represent a broad spectrum of experience including farming, ranching, financial and non-profit land conservanc

y management. depending upon available grant funds, the RCD employs multiple staff members with diverse technical backgrounds to support implementation of the RCD mission. The RCD provides direct assistance to Monterey County farmers and landowners working with us voluntarily to protect their soil, water, and natural habitats. We also partner with agricultural and natural resource protection organizations and agencies throughout the Central Coast.

🌱💧 Improving Irrigation Efficiency in Hollister! 💧🌱

RCDMC's Ag Team recently conducted a distribution uniformity evaluation at Alfa y Omega Farm in Hollister 🤝 in collaboration with the San Benito RCD.

Over two days, we:
✅ Assessed drip tape performance
✅ Evaluated sprinkler distribution
✅Collaborated with farmers on an improved irrigation system design

This project also doubled as a great professional development opportunity 👩‍🌾👨‍🌾 for our team and SBRCD to build skills in conducting irrigation evaluations for farmers.

Why does this matter? 🌎

Understanding distribution uniformity helps farmers:
💡 Improve irrigation system design
💧 Use water more efficiently
🌿 Support healthier crops and reduce waste

🌱✨ Central Coast Growers Expanding Winter Cover Crops! ✨🌱

A new CDFA FREP field update highlights major progress in a multi‑year program supporting growers as they adopt winter cover crops — planted during the off‑season to improve soil health, boost nitrogen efficiency, and protect local waterways. 🌾💧
Here are some key accomplishments so far:

👩‍🌾48 farming operations enrolled in the project

🌾 34 growers planted Merced Rye or Pacheco Triticale in winter 2024–25

🌱 2025–26 cohort: 20 returning + 14 new growers

➕ Some growers added Lana vetch to increase nitrogen fertility

🌿 95% organic operations, 5% conventional

🍓🥬 Crops grown: ~40% berries, ~60% vegetables

📣 Outreach impact:
The team hosted 7 events in the first two years — including webinars, resource fairs, field tours, in‑field demos, and bilingual educational sessions — reaching growers, consultants, researchers, and technical assistance providers.

These accomplishments show a growing movement toward soil‑building, water‑protecting practices across the Central Coast — and a strong commitment from growers to innovate for a more resilient future. 💚🌎
