Last week was Teacher Appreciation Week, but did you know that today is California Day of the Teacher? The day was established through legislation in 1982, inspired by the tradition of “El Día del Maestro” celebrated in Mexico and other Latin American countries.

We thank our teachers for their work and dedication, and we never forget that teaching is the profession that creates all other professions.

Wait—there's more celebrating! It's National Teacher Appreciation Week, and we want to thank our amazing classroom teachers and certificated staff for all they do on behalf of student achievement. From teaching students how to read, to guiding them in developing strong critical thinking skills, our educators inspire curiosity, build confidence, and open doors to endless possibilities every single day.

Their dedication, creativity, and unwavering commitment make a lasting difference not only in the classroom, but in the lives of every student they serve. Today and every day, we celebrate the passion and heart our teachers bring to their work.

Thank you for shaping futures, empowering minds, and making our schools stronger.

Last week, first grade students in the class of Ms. Julietta Morga at Los Padres received their regular monthly visit from the Kiwanis Literacy Club of Salinas. Comprising mostly retired educators, the club's members bring books for students, read to them and help ignite a love of literacy as well.

But last week was a special visit—the club delivered its 10,000th book, El león y el ratón/The Lion and the Mouse. Each student received a copy to take home.

And when the students opened their copies, Melina found she had the 10,000th one!

"When kids have their own library at home, they are going to be better readers," Clifford Gilkey, a retired teacher who's in charge of buying books for students for the Kiwanis Club, told Monterey County Weekly reporter Celia Jimenez, who was on hand for the event.
