Monterey County Office of Education

Monterey County Office of Education Welcome to the Monterey County Office of Education. We provide leadership to galvanize our community. That's where MCOE comes in.

It takes more than books and classrooms to provide children with a good education. It takes educators who are willing to invest themselves in our children's future. Like any other large organization, our schools require business, financial, professional development and technological resources to operate efficiently and effectively. Established more than 150 years ago by California's Constitution,

MCOE provides vital resources to support the county's 24 school districts, two community colleges, and state university. Together, we work to give all of Monterey County's students, from pre-school through post-secondary, the tools they need to succeed in life. MCOE ensures that all Monterey County school districts are fiscally responsible, providing financial oversight, accounting and payroll services, and other tools to ensure financial stability. It would not be cost effective for each school district alone to acquire the many services needed to operate. That's why MCOE is the districts' single source for an array of business, technology, professional development, credentialing, education, teacher recruitment, and support services. MCOE provides teacher, administrator, and instructional support services to improve teaching and learning in the classroom and increase achievement for all students. MCOE also serves as the connection between our schools and the state and federal governments. Every year new laws are passed, new programs are mandated, and old programs are phased out. MCOE monitors changes in legislation and offers its staff as a resource to inform and train district administrators so that they stay current with changing laws that affect education. Monterey County is a region of great demographic, economic, and cultural diversity. These forces create communities with unique needs. By looking at critical issues and sharing resources, the dedicated professionals of the Monterey County Office of Education work to address these needs. Seventh grade students at King City Union School District’s Chalone Peaks Middle School stepped back in time on Friday, May 23, as a part of the campus was transformed into a lively Medieval Faire filled with pageantry and hands-on learning.

The annual event immersed students in the traditions of the medieval era while bringing history lessons to life through interactive experiences and engaging activities. Dressed in themed attire, students began the day with a festive parade leading to the Queen’s Pavilion, where they were welcomed into a day of exploration and adventure. Throughout the faire, students rotated through a variety of educational stations designed to showcase medieval life and culture. A medieval-themed lunch added to the immersive atmosphere. The event encouraged students to think critically while experiencing history in a memorable and hands-on way.

The Medieval Faire has become a beloved tradition at Chalone Peaks Middle School, providing students with an engaging opportunity to connect classroom learning with creativity, collaboration, and school spirit. Representing the Monterey County Office of Education at the event were MCOE Deputy Superintendent Ralph Porras and Monterey County Board of Education Member Annette Yee Steck, who joined students and staff in celebrating the day’s activities and the school’s commitment to innovative learning opportunities.

The Voices of the Amazing A, a student club from Alisal High School, spoke with the Monterey County Office of Education's (MCOE) Inclusive Learning Community of Practice last month in honor of Autism Acceptance Month. Led by Allison Guerin, the Amazing A is focused on changing the way neurodivergent students are viewed and treated and on educating the school community to increase empathy, improve understanding, and reduce bullying.

The Inclusive Learning Community of Practice is composed of teams of educators from seven districts in Monterey County who are committed to examining their current cultures and practices through continuous improvement to create a system that is inclusive of all students. MCOE will continue partnering with Supporting Innovative Practices, part of the Statewide System of Support, to extend this learning community into its second year this fall.

An emotional and heartfelt gathering at our annual Farewell to Friends retirement ceremony honored longtime employees of the Monterey County Office of Education (MCOE) whose years of dedication have left a lasting impact on the organization and the students it serves. For many employees, MCOE becomes more than a workplace over time. Colleagues become lifelong friends, offices become familiar and welcoming spaces, and the work evolves into a meaningful mission centered on supporting student success.

Regardless of department or title, each retiree contributed to MCOE’s greater purpose of preparing students for bright and successful futures. Their commitment, compassion, and years of service have helped shape our organization and strengthen the communities we serve.

To celebrate these remarkable careers, colleagues gathered to share memories and lighthearted stories before each retiree was presented with a framed resolution adopted by the County Board in recognition of their service and accomplishments.

On behalf of the entire MCOE community and the many students whose lives have been positively impacted through your work, thank you for your years of dedication and service. We wish all of our retirees a joyful and well-deserved retirement.
