Female Northern Harrier Hawk. They will hover looking for prey before pouncing. We watched this one hunt and I thought for a moment that she caught a rodent, but no joy. They tend to move fast and it's timing about catching them in a hover to get really good shots.

Did some birding yesterday and captured a new "Lifer". A lifer is a something that you observe for the first time. In this case, a Long-eared Owl taken at Salisbury State Reservation in Salisbury, MA. My thanks to the group of photographers that were gracious enough to show me so that I could get some photos.

I haven't had any new material in a long time, so I decided to start re-posting some of my favorites from the time of the year.

These are Snowy Owls taken at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Plum Island and from the coast of New Hampshire near Rye, NH.

The Harrier Hawks were active at Parker River National Wildlife Reserve (Plum Island) and Salisbury Reservation. Gave us quite a show. While at Plum Island, we were watching Cedar-waxwings, when all of a sudden they all scattered (probably well over 100). I immediately thought a predator and sure enough, a Harrier quickly appeared. That was pretty cool to watch.

While at Salisbury, we also saw an immature bald eagle off in the distance. At one point, it crossed paths with a Harrier.

Recent trip to Parker River National Wildlife Reserve on Plum Island. The Cedar-waxwings were in abundance feasting on the berries. One of my favorites since they are so Regal reminding me of cats :) We did not see any drunk ones and yes, they can get drunk if the berries are fermented to a certain level. Some Robins were also mixed in.

Seals along the seacoast of New Hampshire back on 1/2/2026. They were a good way out probably waiting for low tide so that they could rest on the shoal.

Hummingbirds tanking up from the Trumpet Flowers getting ready for migration. If you make your own food for them, you can drop the water to sugar ratio to 3:1 to give them more energy. They will need it for migration.

We saw this Juvenile Bald Eagle alone hoping it was looking for a meal. At this stage, the parents are actively trying to show their kids how to hunt. After a few minutes, it suddenly flew off when an adult swooped down on it. A short skirmish in the air ended fast before I could get any photos. The adult then perched near the original location. We both figured at first, that it was the parent but now we are thinking that this juvenile infringed upon the territory of another adult and was chasing it off.

Same Beautiful Eagle, different poses. I wanted to capture some poses that were non typical. This adult was cooperating.

This Great Blue Heron was just chilling and never waded in the water. I figure that it already ate and was just enjoying the day. The plumage was really standing out.

Just lucky I guess. This loon popped up right next and gave me quite the opportunity to take a photo shoot. This one was also tagged.
