Megan, you made us proud with your spelling bee success. Two-time regional champion and two-time competitor in the National Spelling Bee, wow!
Congratulations to Wicomico Middle's Megan Barrientos on her two-year reign as the Maryland Eastern Shore Regional Spelling Bee Champion and Scripps National Spelling Bee competitor. The 8th-grader was in her final year of Bee eligibility, and she made us proud, advancing to the 4th round and finishing tied for 79th place.
During her 2026 turn on the National Spelling Bee stage, Megan successfully spelled "aretalogy", picked the correct meaning of "upbraid", and passed the challenging spelling and vocabulary test to advance to the quarterfinals. On Thursday morning she tried the spelling "Yuper" for the word "Yooper" (a native of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan), and her time at the microphone was done.
Thanks for being such an amazing representative of your school, your school system, regional sponsor University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and our whole area, Megan. You epitomize the way our students are !
Thanks also to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore for serving as regional sponsor of the spelling bee so that Megan and other regional spelling bee champions since 2013 could compete in the National Spelling Bee.
