WORLD NO TO***CO DAY
May 31, 2026

(May 28, 2026, Salisbury, MD) – Every year on the 31st of May, World No To***co Day encourages people who smoke to take a pledge to stop smoking for 24 hours. To***co users around the world use the day to practice quitting for a short time or as the start of a lifestyle change.

The World Health Organization declared the first World No To***co Day on May 31, 1988. Each year, this event draws attention to to***co user’s harmful consequences to individuals and society such as increased medical expenses and lost productivity caused by increased disease and early death. Because of this and many other efforts in education and policy, the adult smoking rate in the United States has decreased from 14% in 2019 to 11.6% in 2022 (American Lung Association).

In celebration of World No To***co Day, the Wicomico County Health Department will offer stop to***co use kits at its Salisbury, MD locations at 108 E. Main St., 801 N. Salisbury Blvd. Ste. 201, and 300 W. Carroll Street.

The Wicomico County Health Department offers a virtual stop smoking support group every Thursday at noon. The program offers free education and support. Participants are eligible to receive FREE quit smoking medications including ni****ne replacement patches, ni****ne lozenges, or Varenicline (Chantix). Anyone who lives or works in Wicomico County may participate. Confidential one-one counseling is also available, including for pregnant women.

Take advantage of trying to quit with thousands of others across the nation; pick up a stop to***co use kit and quit for the day…it could be the first of many!

Wicomico County’s Memorial Day ceremony set for May 25

SALISBURY, Md. – Wicomico County’s Memorial Day Ceremony will be held Monday, May 25 at 11 a.m.

The ceremony honors Wicomico County veterans who died in the line of duty, and it will take place at the Wicomico War Veterans' Memorial in front of the Wicomico Civic Center. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the Wicomico Civic Center's Midway Room. All are welcome and encouraged to attend this free event, which is organized by members of the Wicomico County War Memorial Committee.

As part of the annual ceremony, there will be a lowering of the colors by the Wicomico County JROTC, ringing of the Red Knights Memorial Bell, branch prayers, and a volley of arms by the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office. Veterans and their families will be recognized during the ceremony, including a special family tribute to Gold Star Mothers. War Memorial Committee members will perform the Reading of Veterans’ Names, which recognizes those Wicomico County residents who have fallen in the line of service.

In 2002, a group of veterans from all branches of the military came together to honor and preserve the memory of Wicomico County’s fallen heroes. As a result, the Wicomico War Veterans' Memorial was erected at the Wicomico Civic Center, which is itself a living war memorial to all veterans. Flags from each service branch, along with a United States, Maryland, Wicomico County and the POW-MIA flag, now proudly fly over a brick wall displaying bronze plaques with the names of Wicomico County’s fallen veterans beginning with World War I.

The Wicomico County War Memorial Committee has continued the work it began in 2002. Committee members are actively seeking information on those listed on the memorial. If you have information to share about a fallen service person, please email Tricia Collins at [email protected].

To help preserve the memorial and honor a loved one who has served or is serving, citizens may purchase a Tree of Honor Gold Leaf. Engraved with his or her name and a short message, the leaf will be displayed on the Veterans' Tree of Honor in the Wicomico Civic Center lobby. Leaves are $100 each. Please contact Tricia Collins at 410-548-4900. All proceeds are placed in a fund designated to maintain the War Memorial into perpetuity.

County Executive to Attend State of the Schools Event at the Civic Center

Salisbury, MD — County Executive Julie Giordano will attend the annual State of the Schools event hosted by The Salisbury Chamber of Commerce at the Wicomico Civic Center. The event will bring together educators, elected officials, community leaders, and stakeholders to highlight the achievements, challenges, and future priorities of public education in Wicomico County.

The County Executive’s attendance reflects the Administration’s continued commitment to investing in education and supporting the students, teachers, and families of Wicomico County.

Under this Administration, Wicomico County has made record investments in education, including fully funding the Board of Education’s monetary request this budget. In addition, the Administration has prioritized school safety and infrastructure improvements through significant investments in weapons detection systems and major capital projects across the county.

Among the Administration’s key education investments is the forward funding of approximately $21 million for the construction of Fruitland Primary School, ensuring the project remains on schedule and avoiding costly delays. The County has also supported critical facility upgrades, including an upgraded HVAC system at Fruitland Intermediate School and other capital improvement projects designed to provide safe, modern, and effective learning environments for students and staff.

“Education remains one of the most important investments we can make as a county,” said County Executive Giordano. “Our administration has worked hard to ensure our schools receive the resources necessary to support student success, enhance school safety, and modernize educational facilities for future generations.”

The State of the Schools event serves as an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of Wicomico County Public Schools and reinforce the partnerships between local government, educators, and the community.
