St Luke Heritage Gardens This page, is dedicated to the restoration of ST Luke African American Methodist Episcopal AME Church in Salisbury, Missouri.

A 1860s church is buried under us, our sister church is in Glasgow Missouri and we sprung the 2nd baptist in Salisbury. Welcome to St Luke Heritage Gardens, we are a property consisted of St Luke AME church and its parsonage, both built in the Victorian era 1890s. St Luke sits ontop of a Union Church and the parsonage is built with the material left from Union Church. A Union church was a mix of r

eligions that worshiped under one roof, it was established on the estate of one of the first settlers name Sergeant Samual Williams which sat in Buffalo Lick Township around 1812. We are all that is left of his estate, better known as the slave quarters. We also spawned the Second Baptist church in Salisbury, and our Sister church was Campbell Chapel in Glasgow as well. Our project and our history take years to restore, but since 2016 we've been slowly building back what was once rotting away. If you guys don't have a giant thistle out side to watch the butterflies, well? They LOVVVEEE watermelon. I put a big slice out of one that grew in the yard and it's been a non stop buffet for a few days.

These photos shows I believe a Hackberry Emperor butterfly and a Red-spotted Purple butterfly that I can tell.

Storm windows are installed all but one, I didn't want to lift out the heat pump to install that one yet...give me a bit to feel my feet :p

Yesterday, I spent the day touching up the paint on the windows and today I got them installed.

Really like them! You can't even tell there are storm windows installed, they blend in with the original windows so well!

Remember I ordered them from Koonse Glass in Columbia, mo if anyone is needing any.

I now have windows that are better than new dual pane windows, since I literally have two windows. It should help with noise and heat loss in the winter. So I'll say after a few winters they pay for themselves.

Oh and there is a before of this side of the house/parsonage, it really takes a beating from the sun and you can tell it needs another coat of paint already.

The tall thistle Cirsium altissimum a Missouri Native is blooming now!

People see them as a w**d and that I do agree with. They re seed themselves like mad buttt they are an amazing pollinator plant and if you can leave a few to grow...it will bring you all kinds of insect life to view.

First photos show praying mantis looking for dinner and then these Bee's have been making luv to them all day.

Big ol pile of trim work, all cleaned and ready for amber shellac.

I have to figure out how to do it, as I will need to trim up a bunch of it. All the walls have gotten thinner as I removed the plaster and hung dry wall. So casings need to be shaved on the table saw and all the casing trim that is salvaged needs to be trimmed down to fit. So no point in wasting shellac on parts of the trim that will be cut off.

Also shows the original parsonage trim next to the salvaged trim.

I still do not know why there is trim work in the parsonage that is charred/has burnt marks. My only "theory" is that it was salvaged after the original church/masonic lodge burnt in the 1880s and was used in the parsonage in the expansion/remodel in the 1890s. I've found a date in the current church that dates it to 1888.

I can't get every spec of paint off, I'm done...once I amber shellac it will hide it a bit. As they say, your only original once...

I love the wood grain! and this is made from trees you will never ever ever see again. Look how tight/close that grain is, you will never see that at a lumber store today.

Well back to refinishing more woodwork tomorrow.
