At the Topkapi Palace in old Istanbul, we of course visited the Sultan’s Library, a beautifully designed building with diffused light and lots of it. The Sultan had a personal librarian, a highly educated former soldier who brought him whichever book he desired. I was ridiculously pleased to learn that the Sultan’s Librarian did not have to be castrated, like many other guards in the Palace. We also saw the Sultan’s jewels, which included gold candlesticks weighing more than I do, and the largest diamond I’ve ever seen. A good book is of course worth more than rubies…

Turkey has started putting libraries in the airports, with actual books you can check out and return to other airports. Kütüphane is Turkish for library, a word I did my best to tuck away in my leaky brain.

Librarian on vacation, in Zurich, where it is raining and cold. Here is the “mothership” of the Zurich public library, which is obviously a haven for students who need somewhere to study. Also for tourists like me, who just need to get out of the rain and connect to the free WiFi.
