Department History, Episode 2!
January 1983 marked a challenging period for the Department when a group of residents successfully petitioned the County to hold a vote to abolish the Department's fire tax. On May 3, 1983, district residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of retaining the tax, with 800 votes supporting its continuation and only 133 opposed. This strong show of community support provided the foundation for the Department to continue improving and expanding its services.
In June 1983, Fire Chief John Thomason, Sr. resigned, and Wade Myers, Jr. was appointed as his successor.
A major milestone was achieved in January 1988 when the Department applied to the Insurance Services Office (ISO) for a re-evaluation of its fire protection classification—a lifelong goal that many members had worked toward for years. Following an extensive review and testing process, the Department earned an ISO Class 6 rating, becoming one of only two departments in the area to achieve that distinction at the time. This improved classification resulted in lower insurance premiums for both residents and business owners throughout the district.
In December 1990, the Department expanded its services by implementing a Medical First Responder Program, allowing firefighters to provide emergency medical assistance prior to the arrival of an ambulance. To support this growing service, an expansion was completed in mid-1991 at the US 601 Hwy station, providing additional space for the Department's brush truck and a first responder unit.
Continuing its commitment to growth and improved service, the Department constructed a new station on Statesville Boulevard in 1999 to replace the existing facility. The new station provided significantly more interior space and included a third apparatus bay to accommodate future expansion and operational needs.
Later that year, Fire Chief Wade Myers, Jr. resigned after years of dedicated service. He was succeeded by John Thomason, Jr., who became the Department's second-generation Fire Chief, continuing a family tradition of leadership and service to the community.
