Members of the LSC Disaster Services team attended the Aiken County Hurricane Helene outreach event on May 16, hosted by the Aiken Long-Term Recovery Group at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

Representatives from South Carolina Legal Services and South Carolina Offers a Resilience (SCOR) were also in attendance. Through this outreach effort, the team secured three new intakes—survivors of disasters who need assistance—and completed two additional intakes through follow-up, bringing the total to five.

LSC attendees included Jose Valdez, case management supervisor, and Michael Fernandez, disaster case manager for Aiken County.

United States Senator Ted Budd’s Regional Director Justin Somers visited Trinity Oaks - A Senior Living Community last week. He joined us for lunch to learn about the ministries of Lutheran Services Carolinas.

Teammates discussed LSC’s advocacy priorities: adequate Medicaid and Medicare funding from Washington, a legal immigration path, etc., to address the shortage of direct care workers, and Hurricane Helene support.

Our LSC New Americans Program office in Columbia, South Carolina, had a wonderful World Refugee Day celebration.

We had a beautiful day with around 300 people in attendance! Everyone enjoyed food from around the world, Pelican's Ice, Ethiopian coffee and then participated in so many activities (flower crafts, Ukrainian crafts, soccer games led by Soccer Shots coaches, bounce house, yard games, exploring the fire truck, petting the police dog, getting free books from the local library in their mobile unit, facepainting, popcorn, and petting the baby animals in the petting zoo (goats, a Highland cow, and a baby CAMEL!)

Thank you to all of those who made this possible We couldn’t have done it without this incredible community of partners and volunteers.

🎉LSC Fast Fact Friday!🎉

Do you know the muffin man? 🧁

While we don’t know him personally, we do know the incredible bakers at Trinity Landing - A Senior Living Community!

Fast Fact: They bake 250 muffins every week for residents—filling the community with fresh flavors, warm smiles, and a whole lot of love.

Now that’s something worth waking up for! 💙

LSC was honored to be part of the NC Synod, ELCA Gathering held at Lenoir-Rhyne University over the weekend. We especially cherished the opportunity to spend time with the congregations and leaders who partner so faithfully with many of our programs and services.

Our own Lara Hollaway, North Carolina Community Engagement Coordinator for the LSC New Americans Program, presented alongside Pastor Michael Dickson and Ginny Hultquist from First Lutheran Church in Greensboro. Together, they shared important insights into the realities facing immigrants today and how communities of faith can respond with compassion, understanding, and action.

We’re grateful for opportunities like this to elevate awareness, strengthen partnerships, and live out our mission of welcoming and serving our neighbors. 💙

When systems stall, the community becomes the connection.

Immigration systems can be complex, slow, and unpredictable. Families often find themselves waiting—uncertain of what comes next. In the season of Pentecost, many churches remember how God’s Spirit helped people understand across languages—and how God makes His will clear by drawing us together in love and purpose.

Together, we are the connection families rely on. In this Pentecost season, thank you for helping make sure no one has to wait alone.

A recent intake budget showed that about $2,500/month can help keep one family stable during a disruption (rent, utilities, car payment, and food).
