The strongest predictor of future homelessness is past homelessness.

That’s why we launched Operation Home to walk alongside Veterans even after they’ve found housing.

Through ongoing case management, job support, and financial counseling, Operation Home helps prevent the return to homelessness and builds long-term stability. 🙌

💛 Help us provide lasting care and stability to Veterans in our community: https://rowanhelpingministries.org/donate

Housing is just the beginning.

Operation Home is Rowan Helping Ministries’ aftercare program for Veterans transitioning out of homelessness — because stability doesn’t stop once someone gets the keys.

Thanks to a VA GPD Case Management grant, this program offers:
✔️ Housing support
✔️ Employment assistance
✔️ Financial guidance
✔️ Ongoing care

Our goal? To make homelessness in Rowan County rare, brief, and one-time.

Be a Helping Hand in Times of Crisis

Every day, neighbors in our community walk through our doors facing eviction, utility disconnections, or other urgent financial crises. Through the Crisis Assistance Network, we work to prevent homelessness and help families stay safe, warm, and housed. But we can’t do it alone.

As a Crisis Assistance Volunteer, you’ll play a vital role in helping low-income individuals and families access emergency support. Volunteers assist with greeting clients, gathering information, organizing documentation, and supporting staff in connecting clients to critical resources like rent, utility, and prescription assistance.

💼 Location: 226 N. Long Street, Salisbury, NC 28144
🕗 Time Commitment: One weekday morning or afternoon per week
📋 Requirements: Basic computer skills, empathy, and a willingness to complete a background check

Your compassion and presence can make all the difference during one of the most difficult moments in someone’s life. If you’re looking for a meaningful way to give back, we’d love to have you join our team.

For several years, Marie has relied on Rowan Helping Ministries’ Food Pantry to stretch her monthly food budget. But in fall of 2024, with cold weather setting in and her finances stretched thin, Marie visited our Clothing Center for the first time. She hoped to find warm clothing among the gently used, donated items that fill the racks of our Clothing Center.

As a wheelchair user and amputee, finding clothing that fits comfortably and meets her unique needs can be a challenge. With help from the volunteers who give their time in our Clothing Center, she was able to find several items that were just right for her, both in fit and function.

Thanks to the generosity of those who donate their gently used items and the volunteers who sort, fold, and distribute them, our Clothing Center serves as an important resource for community members like Marie, who need clothing for work, job interviews, and other life needs.

⚠️The ongoing federal government shutdown is creating uncertainty for many families in our community. Delays in federal programs like SNAP benefits can make it harder for families to access the food and resources they rely on.

Rowan Helping Ministries is here to support Rowan County residents who may be affected, but we need our community’s help!

Putting God’s Love Into Action

Rowan Helping Ministries is a continuation of Rowan Cooperative Christian Ministry, a ministry begun in 1967 by several of Salisbury’s downtown churches. Rowan Helping Ministries was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non- profit organization September 18, 1986. At that time, the Shelter rotated among several of the downtown churches and only operated during the winter months. The Soup Kitchen was provided by First Presbyterian Church and Crisis Assistance Network worked out of John Calvin Presbyterian Church. The Clothing Center was at the old Price High School building and Dial Help, incorporated in November 1970, was in the basement of Tri-County Mental Health. In December 1989, all of these programs moved to 226 North Long Street and became a part of Rowan Helping Ministries.

Our programs include: the Shelter, Jeannie's Kitchen, Clothing Center, Food Pantry, Crisis Assistance Network, Transitional Housing Programs, Rowan Helping Ministries-West, and New Tomorrows. In August of 2017, Food For Thought- a weekend backpack program which provides meals to food insecure children- came under the umbrella of Rowan Helping Ministries programs & services, as well. We rely on 45-50 volunteers daily, and without them, Rowan Helping Ministries wouldn't be possible.
