The City of Salisbury is currently accepting applications for a full-time position in the Utility Department. This is an excellent opportunity for a dependable, hard-working individual who is interested in stable employment, competitive benefits, and meaningful work serving the community.
Position Overview

The Utility Department is responsible for operating and maintaining the City’s electric utility, water treatment plant, water distribution system, and sewer collection system. The selected applicant will perform a variety of hands-on duties involving utility operations, maintenance, repairs, equipment operation, and other work as assigned by City management or City leadership.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Perform a wide range of utility maintenance and repair duties.
• Assist with water, wastewater, electric utility, and general City operations.
• Operate or assist with specialized equipment and machinery.
• Work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
• Perform physically demanding work, including heavy lifting and long hours when needed.
• Respond to after-hours needs, including possible weekend or holiday work.

Preferred Experience and Qualifications

Experienced applicants are strongly encouraged to apply. Previous work in utilities, construction, public works, water, wastewater, electric service, equipment operation, or similar fields is a plus. A water distribution license, wastewater license, water treatment license, or other verifiable related experience will be considered favorably.

Applicants without prior utility experience may also be considered if they demonstrate a strong work ethic, dependability, and the ability to learn. Training may be provided to the right applicant and will require both on-the-job training and classroom instruction. This training will ultimately lead to Department of Natural Resources (DNR) testing and, upon successful completion, licensing through DNR.

Experience operating equipment such as forklifts, backhoes, skid steers, bucket trucks, or other large machinery is also preferred.

This is a full-time position with a pay range of $31,000 to $58,000 per year, depending on experience, licenses, and qualifications.

City of Salisbury Encourages Residents to Conserve Electricity During Regional Energy Emergency

The City of Salisbury is closely monitoring a regional Energy Emergency Alert issued by the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) due to extreme heat, high electricity demand, and generation outages affecting portions of the regional power grid.
While electric service remains stable at this time, residents and businesses are encouraged to voluntarily reduce electricity use, particularly during peak demand hours, to help maintain grid reliability and reduce the risk of service interruptions.

How You Can Help
Residents can assist by taking simple energy-saving measures, including:
• Raising thermostat settings a few degrees when possible.
• Turning off unnecessary lights and electronics.
• Delaying the use of large appliances such as clothes dryers, dishwashers, and ovens until off-peak hours.
• Limiting electric vehicle charging during peak demand periods.
• Conserving energy in homes and businesses whenever practical.

City Preparedness Efforts
The City of Salisbury has reviewed its emergency procedures and is monitoring system conditions closely. City staff are prepared to respond should additional conservation measures become necessary. Critical public services, including water, wastewater, emergency communications, and public safety operations, remain a priority.
Stay Informed

The current alert is an Energy Emergency Alert Level 2 (EEA2), which means all available generation resources are being used and conservation measures are being encouraged. If conditions worsen, additional actions may be required by regional grid operators.

The City will continue to monitor updates and provide information to residents as needed.

PUBLIC NOTICE: Utility Rate Adjustments

The City is committed to providing safe, reliable water and electric services to all residents and businesses. Over the past several years, the cost of purchasing electricity and treating and delivering clean water has risen significantly. In addition, essential repairs and upgrades to the water plant have become necessary to maintain system reliability and meet regulatory standards.
To continue providing dependable service and to keep our utility systems financially stable, the City will implement the following rate adjustments in the August billing:
Water Service
• All minimum monthly charge will increase by $5. For example, the residential will increase from $15 to $20.
• After the first 1,000 gallons, water usage rates will increase by 6%.
Electric Service
• Residential minimum charge will increase from $11.59 to $20, with a 6% increase to usage rates after the minimum.
• Commercial minimum charge will increase from $14.86 to $30 with a 6 % increase to usage rates after the minimum
• Large commercial minimum charge will increase to $60 with a 6 % increase to usage rates after the minimum
• Large commercials with demand minimum charge will increase from $9.94 to $10.94 with a 6% increase in usage rates after the minimum.
These adjustments are necessary to keep pace with rising energy purchase costs, maintain critical infrastructure, and ensure the long term reliability of our utility systems. The City remains committed to managing costs responsibly and investing in the services our community depends on every day.
We appreciate your understanding and continued support as we work to maintain safe, efficient, and sustainable utility services for all customers.
