At approximately 3:32 a.m., The Sallisaw Police Department received a call of a trailer stuck on the railroad tracks near Cherokee and Dogwood. Officers responded quickly and assisted everyone out of the vehicle before the train struck the trailer.

The occupants and livestock were not injured. The train crossing will be temporarily closed while the scene is cleared. Please use alternate routes and avoid the area if possible.

The Shurley Street train crossing will be closed as well during this time.

The Sallisaw Police Department is keeping Fort Smith Police Officer Kyle Newman, his family, and the entire Fort Smith Police Department in our thoughts and prayers following this morning’s tragic incident.
We stand in full support of Officer Newman and all of the brave men and women serving the Fort Smith community during this incredibly difficult time. Incidents like this are a solemn reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face every day in service to others.

We pray for strength, healing, and protection for Officer Newman and comfort for his loved ones and fellow officers.

Shooting Investigation at Motel 6 on Cherokee Avenue

At approximately midnight on May 12, 2026, officers with the Sallisaw Police Department responded to a reported shooting at the Motel 6 located on Cherokee Avenue in Sallisaw.

Upon arrival, officers located Lucas Blackbird, 42, suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper torso area. Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and transported Blackbird to a local hospital for treatment. At this time, he is reported to be in stable condition.

Due to the nature of the incident, the investigation has been turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Investigators do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public at this time.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Scam Alert –
Fraudulent Court Notice Circulating

The Police Department is warning the public about a fraudulent notice currently being distributed that falsely appears to be an official court document related to traffic violations and unpaid tolls.

This document contains inaccuracies and red flags. For example, the State seal in the documents is typed as “Stayte’ of Oklahoma”, and the bottom of the image is cut off. It also includes suspicious elements such as threats of immediate enforcement action, demands for payment through unofficial means, and a QR code directing recipients to make payment.

This notice is a scam!!

Residents are strongly advised:

Do NOT send money or provide personal information in response to this document.

Do NOT scan the QR code or follow any payment instructions listed.

Be cautious of any communication demanding immediate payment or threatening legal action without proper verification.

Official court notices will come through verified channels and will not pressure individuals into immediate payment using unconventional methods.

If you receive a similar notice:

Report it to your local law enforcement agency.

Contact the appropriate court directly using verified contact information.

Share this warning with friends and family to help prevent others from becoming victims.

Our office is actively monitoring this situation and working to ensure the public is informed and protected.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 24, 2026

On April 23, 2026, at approximately 4:10 p.m., a 57-year-old man was struck by a northbound Union Pacific train in Sallisaw, Oklahoma. The incident occurred just North of the EZ Mart near the intersection of South Kerr Boulevard and West Cherokee Avenue.

Emergency responders arrived on scene and transported the individual to a medical facility for treatment. At this time, he is listed in critical but stable condition.

The incident remains under investigation.

Due to a train vs. pedestrian accident, multiple railroad crossings throughout Sallisaw are currently closed.

At this time, the only open rail crossings are:
• Shirley Street
• JT Stites
• Shiloh

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes and expect delays while the situation is being managed.

The Sallisaw Police Department is saddened to learn of the passing of a LeFlore County Deputy following a standoff earlier today near Wister.

We ask our community to keep the deputy’s family, fellow deputies, and the entire LeFlore County law enforcement and first responder community in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

We are also thankful to hear that the Wister Police Officer injured in the incident is now in stable condition, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.

Today is a serious reminder of the risks our law enforcement officers face each day in service to their communities.
