The Salmon Community Garden at the Sacajawea Center provides garden plots for rent and strives to help improve community health & food security by increasing accessibility to food through gardening. We can work together as a community to connect and engage those in need with resources available to them- one of those resources being the Salmon Community Garden, located at the Sacajawea Center. The
Garden was started by Candace Burns as a Heritage Garden. Tawna Skinner continued the garden as a free community garden and a few years later, Sadie Barrett and others partnered with organizations such as the Salmon FF and Department of Justice Probation to keep the garden going. In 2013 and 2014, AmeriCorps Vista, Sara Campbell, transformed the space into what it is today: Low-cost rentable space for the community and free space for food banks and other non-profits. In 2015, the garden provided a space for Sweet Belly Farm, a new local business, as well as the Calvary Chapel, Department of Justice Probation, and local families. In the past, coordinators have been mostly volunteer with minimal time to develop partnerships and sustainability. As the summer season of 2021 approaches, please contact the Sacajawea Center if you are interested in renting a bed or volunteering!
