πŸ”₯ Create Defensible Space to Help Protect Your Home from Wildfire πŸ”₯

Even if you live in a suburban neighborhood, defensible space is one of the most important things you can do to reduce fire risk around your home. Here's how to break it down by zones:

Zone 1: 0–5 feet
This area includes your home, deck, balcony, attached fencing, and landscaping up to 5 feet out.

Remove all combustible materials like wood mulch, dry vegetation, and leaf or needle buildup from roofs and gutters.

Trim tree branches that hang over your roof, eaves, or near the chimney.

Be mindful of vegetation near electrical wires. Trees or limbs growing into power lines are a fire hazard. Contact your local utility provider for proper clearance guidelines and never attempt to trim branches around power lines yourself, trained professionals should handle it.

Zone 2: 5–30 feet
This area extends from 5 to 30 feet from the home and includes yards and outbuildings.

Keep vegetation well-spaced and pruned. Remove dead or dying branches.

Maintain a healthy or irrigated lawn/yard, or develop a firewise landscape.

Firewood storage: If you don’t have space to store firewood 30 feet away from the house, use a fire-rated metal box, fire-resistant container, or enclosed shed placed as far from structures and vegetation as possible. Set it on gravel or bare soil, and never stack firewood directly against the house, fencing, or beneath eaves, vents, or overhangs.

Zone 3: 30–100 feet
This applies if you have more space or live on a larger lot.

Thin and space out vegetation. Limb up trees to keep fire low and prevent it from climbing into tree canopies.

Start now, small steps can make a big difference.
Clean, maintain, and be mindful of anything flammable near your home. Fire doesn’t need much fuel to spread, but with preparation, you can help stop it before it starts.
